Wat Chiang Man is the oldest temple in Chiang Mai. Located in the heart of the Old City, this temple stands as a unique religious landmark.

Constructed by King Mangrai in 1297 as part of the founding of Chiang Mai, Wat Chiang Man is the city's oldest temple. Its walls and carvings hold centuries of historical and religious significance. The main temple is surrounded by ancient brick walls, creating a sacred atmosphere. Inside, statues and murals depict ancient Buddhist tales.

The Architecture of Wat Chiang Man
Wat Chiang Man is renowned for its distinctive Lanna architecture, featuring two main chapels. The larger chapel enshrines Buddha and is adorned with intricate designs. The smaller chapel houses two revered Buddha statues: the stone-carved Phra Sila and the jade Phra Satang Man. Both statues are believed to bestow blessings and protect the city from calamities.

The temple's stupa is the oldest and first architectural structure in the region. Its design blends Lanna and Sinhalese (ancient Sri Lankan/Indian) styles. During the reign of King Tilokaraj (1441-1487), the ninth king of the Mangrai dynasty, the stupa collapsed. Known as Chedi Chang Lom, the name translates to 'Elephant-Surrounded Stupa,' referencing the elephant statues encircling it. Similar stupas can be found in Sukhothai and Si Satchanalai.

The ordination hall, or ubosot, of Wat Chiang Man dates back to the Mangrai dynasty era. On the front porch of the ubosot, a stone stele provides details about the founding of Chiang Mai. The inscription, dating back to 1581, marks April 12, 1296, as the official establishment date of Chiang Mai.

Situated in the heart of Chiang Mai's Old City, the temple is enclosed by walls along Ratchaphakhinai Road. It is easily accessible on foot from the town, located between Phra Pok Klao 13 and Ratchaphakhinai 1. Enter the old walled city area through the Chang Puak Gate on the northern wall, then turn left onto Ratchaphakhinai 1. The temple is approximately 200 meters ahead on the right.
