Some actors undergo incredible transformations to authentically portray their characters. They might wear elaborate makeup, change their hair, grow facial hair, or get tattoos. However, in some cases, they must dramatically alter their weight. Here are 10 examples of actors who underwent impressive weight changes for a film role.
10. Adam Driver - Silence

Adam Driver is renowned for his role as artist Adam Sackler in the HBO series Girls and his captivating performances in films like Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Paterson, and Inside Llewyn Davis. He made his film debut in 2011, but it is one particular performance that has truly left a lasting impression on his fans.
In 2016, Adam Driver played a key role in Martin Scorsese’s Oscar-nominated film Silence. He portrayed Francisco Garupe, a priest from Portugal who embarks on a journey to Japan with a fellow priest in search of their missing mentor.
For this role, Driver was asked to undergo a significant weight loss, shedding 18 kilograms (40 pounds). Reflecting on this transformation, Driver commented, “I don’t think I’ve ever taken it to the extreme before. [ . . .] You’re so hungry and so tired at some points that there’s nothing you can do.”
9. Jake Gyllenhaal - Southpaw

Some actors have undergone dramatic physical transformations for a role, either packing on pounds or shedding so much weight that it made them appear unhealthy. The delicate ballerina we observed in Black Swan closely mirrored the real-life Natalie Portman during filming. Already possessing a petite frame, Portman shed an additional 9 kilograms (20 lb) to portray Nina Sayers. Her dedication led her to practice up to 16 hours daily, surviving on minimal food, a routine resembling that of a true professional ballerina.
Portman became so emaciated that on some nights, she feared for her life. She shared with Entertainment Weekly, “It was the first time I understood how you could get so immersed in a role that it could almost consume you.”

Long before his acclaimed role in Dallas Buyers Club, Leto underwent an even more extreme transformation for his portrayal of Mark David Chapman, the man who assassinated John Lennon, in Chapter 27.
To prepare for the 2007 film, Leto put on an astonishing 30 kilograms (67 lbs). His weight gain was largely fueled by consuming microwaved pints of ice cream mixed with olive oil and soy sauce. The drastic change led to health issues, including gout and high cholesterol.

2. 50 Cent – All Things Fall Apart
