While certain superpowers—like super strength, speed, telekinesis, and energy blasts—appear frequently in comics, there exists a small group of characters who break away from these conventions, wielding abilities that stretch the boundaries of the superhero genre.
In this list, we'll leave out comedic characters (such as Arm-Fall-Off-Boy and The Color Kid), godlike figures whose powers are too vague to define, and characters who only appear once. Here are some of the most bizarre superpowers that you'll find in the world of comics.
10. Jamie Madrox (The Multiple Man)

Jamie Madrox, known as the Multiple Man, is a mutant capable of generating flawless duplicates of himself by absorbing kinetic energy. Each copy functions independently, with its own thoughts and actions, and can even replicate items and clothing worn by the original Jamie.
The most intriguing aspect of Jamie's power is his ability to reabsorb his duplicates at will, integrating their memories and experiences into his own. This allows Jamie Prime to endure the death of a duplicate and even use his power as a form of healing, where a new duplicate formed from an injured one will only carry half of the original damage.
9. The Clock King

The Clock King, a master of time manipulation without any inherent superpowers, excels in analyzing time-related patterns. Known for using advanced, clock-inspired tools during his crimes, his most remarkable talent is his perception of the temporal plane. He once escaped a robbery flawlessly by memorizing the train schedule and making a daring leap from a bridge onto a speeding train.
A brilliant strategist, Clock King once orchestrated a successful assault on the Justice League Watchtower. His exceptional time management skills also serve him well in combat. Imagine being able to calculate the precise moment it takes for an opponent to throw a punch—Clock King can do this effortlessly, allowing him to evade punches, kicks, and blades with ease.
8. Penance

Formerly known as Speedball, Robbie Baldwin now goes by the name Penance, one of the most masochistic characters in the comic world.
As Speedball, Baldwin's abilities were rather typical: he could generate a kinetic energy field that allowed him to propel himself into battle. Nothing particularly remarkable. But after a devastating event in Marvel's Civil War storyline, Baldwin sustained severe injuries, causing his powers to evolve, which is why he makes it onto this list.
As a form of punishment, Baldwin can only tap into his abilities when he's enduring intense physical pain. To trigger his powers, he created a terrifying S&M-inspired suit filled with internal spikes and barbs that continuously tear into his flesh.
It’s probably not a superpower you’d want, but it’s undeniably cool.
7. Taskmaster

The power to “learn” may not seem extraordinary at first, but when you take a deeper look at this unique ability, you might reconsider. Taskmaster’s capability to absorb and master skills at an overwhelming speed makes him one of the most dangerous adversaries in the Marvel universe.
Taskmaster can instantly absorb knowledge and use muscle memory to replicate the movements and abilities of other superheroes and martial artists. With his “photographic reflexes,” Taskmaster has mastered various combat techniques by mimicking the fighting styles of Elektra, Iron Fist, and Shang-Chi, the swordplay of Black Knight, Silver Samurai, and Swordsman, and the marksmanship of Captain America, Hawkeye, Punisher, and Bullseye. He also displays a well-developed athleticism akin to Black Panther, Daredevil, and Spider-Man. Once Taskmaster has replicated an opponent’s physical actions, he can anticipate their next move.
We’re guessing Taskmaster was the ultimate teacher’s pet.
6. Cypher

Cypher is another “superhuman learner,” but his talent is focused on understanding languages.
Cypher is a mutant with the ability to instinctively understand, translate, and read any language. This gift makes him an essential asset as both a translator and diplomat—skills often overlooked in the superhero multiverse, where aliens, mystics, international hitmen, and political leaders frequently cross paths.
However, the true scope of Cypher’s power becomes clear when you delve deeper into his ability to understand any language. He can break codes and interpret computer languages (he’s even been known to speak in binary and infiltrate electronic systems). Cypher can read his enemies' body language, anticipating their combat moves. His linguistic prowess extends so far that he can “read” the very structure of a building, figuring out how to bring it down.
Makes you wish you’d paid more attention in French class, oui?
5. Maggott

Formerly a short-lived member of the X-Men, Maggott is a mutant with a hollow digestive system that houses two semi-sentient slugs. These slugs can bore their way through his torso, using a potent enzyme to devour any solid object in their path at incredible speed, channeling the energy back to Maggott. He then uses this energy to enhance his size, strength, endurance, and durability.
He typically dines in solitude.
4. The Ten-Eyed Man

In our effort to avoid including “joke characters,” we were torn about whether to include The Ten-Eyed Man. However, DC Comics has portrayed him with such seriousness that we couldn’t dismiss him as a joke . . . just listen to the tragic story behind this character’s origin.
Philip Reardon was a soldier in the U.S. Special Forces during the Vietnam War when a grenade fragment struck him between the eyes. After leaving the military, he found work as a security guard at a warehouse. Following a failed robbery attempt, for which he wrongly accused Batman, an explosion burned Reardon's retinas, worsening his previous injury and blinding him permanently. A skilled surgeon successfully reconnected his optic nerves to his fingertips, giving Reardon the ability to 'see' through his fingers, and thus, The Ten Eyed Man was born.
Using his 360-degree vision, Reardon enhanced his Special Forces training and sought bloody vengeance on Batman. After being overpowered by the Dark Knight, The Ten-Eyed Man was imprisoned, with his hands placed in a special box to keep him 'blind' at all times.
3. The Doom Patrol

No list of bizarre superpowers would be complete without the inclusion of the Doom Patrol, one of the most misunderstood and isolated superhero teams to ever grace the pages of comic books.
A group of super-powered outcasts, whose abilities often bring them sorrow and isolation, the Doom Patrol made their debut in My Greatest Adventure #80 (June 1963) and quickly earned a reputation as one of the most bizarre titles in mainstream comics. While many comic book characters with unique powers at the time were written as satirical takes on the industry, the Doom Patrol’s troubled and mentally unstable team members were among the first to suggest that superpowers could be unsettlingly abnormal. The series took a surreal turn when Grant Morrison took over writing duties starting with issue #19 of the 1980s relaunch, introducing elements like Dadaism, surrealism, and the cut-up technique developed by William S. Burroughs and Brion Gysin.
The diverse and unusual superpowers featured in Doom Patrol are arguably enough to fill an entire list. Here are just a few of the characters and their unique abilities that have appeared in the series over time:
The Quiz: A Japanese woman with an intense fear of dirt, The Quiz possessed every power imaginable. To strip her of a power, one would need to consciously think of it.
Crazy Jane: A woman with sixty-four distinct personalities, each one harboring its own set of superpowers.
Danny the Street: A sentient, living 'place' that has the ability to teleport itself to any location at will.
Love Glove: He possesses the ability to travel to the mystical 'Glove Tree,' where he can choose from an array of super-powered gloves, including the 'Shove Glove' and the 'Techno Glove.'
Ambush Bug: His most fascinating ability is his awareness of existing within the world of a comic book, allowing him to break the 'fourth wall' and directly address the reader, making him one of the few characters to do so.
Mr. Nobody: A character who has the disturbing ability to gradually erode the sanity of everyone in his presence.
The Animal-Mineral-Vegetable Man: A being capable of transforming any part of his body into any animal, plant, or mineral, and can even alter several parts simultaneously.
2. Matter-Eater Lad

Tenzil Kem, hailing from the planet Bismoll, has the remarkable ability to consume almost any form of matter. That's right—his superpower is simply eating! Whether it's sulfuric acid, prison bars, jagged glass, or even molten lava, Matter-Eater Lad can handle it all. On one occasion, he even helped his fellow heroes escape by chewing his way underground to create a tunnel.
While Matter-Eater Lad might not be everyone's first pick, he is undeniably a significant character in the DC Universe. As a member of the Legion of Super-Heroes, he once saved the universe in Superboy and The Legion of Super-Heroes #251 by consuming the so-called 'indestructible' Miracle Machine. Unfortunately, this feat came at a steep cost, as the machine's energies drove him to madness for several months.
That definitely counts for something.
1. The Scarlet Witch

The Scarlet Witch's hexes have been used in a variety of ways, including lighting fires, creating force fields, removing air from areas, stopping projectiles, and even exploding objects. Her powers have also been pivotal in surprising situations, such as making the Evil Eye turn against the inter-dimensional warlord Dormammu, causing Ultron to malfunction, or triggering a gas explosion under the Brotherhood of Mutants' hideout.
Throughout her history, Wanda has displayed her remarkable ability to alter probabilities in creative and destructive ways. Her powers have led to numerous unexpected and dramatic outcomes, like neutralizing enemies or manipulating elements in the environment to her advantage.
Recently, the character of Wanda Maximoff has been re-imagined to suggest that her powers may extend far beyond mere probability manipulation, now influencing reality itself. This enhancement of her abilities positions her as one of the most formidable figures in the Marvel universe.
