When life gets tough and my energy is low, there's nothing better than relaxing with a warm cup of tea and a timeless movie. It reminds me of cozy rainy afternoons spent watching Turner Classic Movies with my mom during childhood. Plus, seeing how much the world has evolved since these films were made serves as a comforting reminder that whatever I'm facing will eventually pass.
So, if you're feeling overwhelmed or stressed, here are some of my all-time favorite classic films that are guaranteed to bring a smile to your face:
1. The Thin Man (1934)

Henri Leduc / Getty Images Not long ago, the luxury of being able to watch any movie at the push of a button was reserved for the extremely wealthy. Now, just a few clicks and I have a world of movies at my fingertips—it's like I have a fortune of films in my pocket.
So, if you're feeling overwhelmed or stressed, here are some of my all-time favorite classic films that are guaranteed to bring a smile to your face:
1. The Thin Man (1934)
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer / Via youtube.com No, this isn't about Slenderman—it's about The Thin Man. This movie, along with its sequels, is such a brilliant concept that I’m honestly surprised we don’t have a reboot directed by Rian Johnson starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt. While we wait for Hollywood to get it together, at least we can enjoy the original. Nick (William Powell) and Nora (Myrna Loy) are a stylish couple with a charming dog who love their cocktails and solving mysteries. It's part silly, part suspenseful, and a whole lot of fun. You can stream it for free on the Internet Archive.
2. A Night At The Opera (1935)
View this video on YouTubeMetro-Goldwyn-Mayer / Via youtube.com The Marx Brothers embody pure comedic mayhem, and I was torn when it came time to choose just one of their films for this list. Ultimately, I went with this one because it was a family favorite on VHS, and it still makes me laugh just as much now at 39 as it did when I was 8. While the movie does have a plot, it really serves as a stage for the Marx Brothers to do their thing with an opera as the setting. And let’s be real, Groucho’s sharp wit alone makes it worth watching. You can stream it for free on the Internet Archive.
3. My Man Godfrey (1936)
View this video on YouTubeUniversal Pictures / Via youtube.com This screwball comedy from the Depression era stars Carole Lombard as a wealthy, carefree young woman who takes the ‘forgotten man’ William Powell into her chaotic family as part of a scavenger hunt. She hires him as her butler, and while she falls for him, he teaches her eccentric family members some truly memorable lessons. You can stream it for free on YouTube.
4. Ninotchka (1939)
View this video on YouTubeMetro-Goldwyn-Mayer / Via youtube.com Greta Garbo stars as Ninotchka, a stern communist from the USSR who unexpectedly falls for a charming Count (Melvyn Douglas) and the indulgences of capitalism during a diplomatic trip to Paris. Garbo is often remembered for her more dramatic roles and her iconic line, "I want to be alone," but her comedic timing in this film is truly delightful. Fun fact: one of the screenwriters is Billy Wilder (known for Some Like It Hot and Sunset Boulevard), so you can bet the dialogue is sharp. You can stream it for free on the Internet Archive.
5. The Philadelphia Story (1940)
View this video on YouTubeMetro-Goldwyn-Mayer / Via youtube.com This is one of the all-time greatest romantic comedies, starring some of my favorite classic Hollywood icons. Jimmy Stewart plays a tabloid reporter who visits Philadelphia socialite Katharine Hepburn. She’s a proud divorcée preparing for a lavish second wedding, but her first husband, Cary Grant, has other plans. This film has it all: two love triangles, Hepburn's stunning wardrobe, a witty script, and a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes. Honestly, just thinking about this movie calms me down. You can stream it for free on the Internet Archive.
6. My Favorite Wife (1940)
View this video on YouTubeRKO Pictures / Via youtube.com If you enjoy a bit of chaos, My Favorite Wife is your perfect match. Cary Grant plays a man who remarries after his first wife (Irene Dunne) is lost at sea and presumed dead. But things take an unexpected turn during his honeymoon when his first wife suddenly resurfaces — and he meets the charming man (Randolph Scott) who was her only companion while stranded on a desert island for several years. This movie is currently streaming on Max for subscribers.
7. Ball Of Fire (1941)
View this video on YouTubeRKO Pictures / Via youtube.com My mom is a huge Barbara Stanwyck fan, and my affection for her comes naturally. What makes her stand out? She has such a genuine, commanding presence on screen, often playing fascinating, independent women (we absolutely love that!). In this screwball take on the "Snow White" story, she plays a nightclub singer who helps a group of awkward encyclopedia writers (one of whom is played by Gary Cooper) update their slang section, while also teaching them how to enjoy life. You can stream it for free on Peacock.
8. In The Good Old Summertime (1949)
View this video on YouTubeMetro-Goldwyn-Mayer / Via youtube.com If you love You’ve Got Mail, this musical is one of the movies that inspired it (along with the equally wonderful The Shop Around The Corner). Judy Garland stars as a music store employee in 1900s Chicago who falls in love with her pen pal — who, ironically, is also someone who makes her life difficult on a daily basis. The song "I Don’t Care," which Garland sings with so much carefree joy and flailing energy, is something I can’t resist joining in on. You can rent this movie on Apple TV or Prime.
9. Sabrina (1954)
View this video on YouTubeParamount Pictures / Via youtube.com This movie is single-handedly responsible for my belief that the right haircut can change your life. Young Sabrina (Audrey Hepburn) is a chauffeur's daughter with a painfully hopeless crush on one of her dad's clients (William Holden). After a suicide attempt, she goes to cooking school in Paris and comes back with a new outlook on life and a very chic pixie cut. She's extremely fabulous, and she quickly catches her old crush's attention — and his brother's. Love triangle alert! You can stream it for free on Pluto TV.
10. Desk Set (1957)
View this video on YouTube20th Century Studios / Via youtube.com Though it was made well before the invention of generative AI, this romantic comedy feels really resonant with life in 2025. Katherine Hepburn plays a sharp-as-a-chef's-knife research librarian who butts heads with Spencer Tracy, the computer expert who's been assigned with automating her department. Just wait til you see what the computers in this movie look like! Oh, and it's technically a Christmas movie, but I think it's one of the rare ones that holds up all year round. You can stream it for free on the Internet Archive.
11. Gigi (1958)

I absolutely love this musical, though I know it's not for everyone. If talk-singing isn't your style, feel free to skip it (my partner would rather endure three root canals than watch this, so I get it). Based on Colette's novel, it tells the story of young Gigi (Leslie Caron), a courtesan-in-training in 1900s Paris who unexpectedly falls for her family friend, playboy Gaston (Louis Jordan). While this film doesn't hold up by 2025's standards (Maurice Chevalier’s “Thank Heaven For Little Girls” is a “what were we thinking?” moment), I still absolutely adore it. You can stream it for free on Tubi.
12. Bell, Book, And Candle (1958)

Kim Novak plays the ultimate movie witch (aside from Fairuza Balk in *The Craft*, of course) in this quirky little treasure. She becomes infatuated with her Greenwich Village neighbor (and *Vertigo* co-star), Jimmy Stewart, but things get complicated when she discovers he's engaged to a non-witch. Enter magic, mischief, and mayhem. Big shoutout to her stunning, supermodel cat Pyewacket and the underground witch's hangout, The Zodiac, where I’d love to spend an evening. You can stream it for free on the Internet Archive.
13. Pillow Talk (1959)

In what might be one of the most delightfully ridiculous films ever made, Doris Day stars as an interior decorator who shares a party line with the charming womanizer, Rock Hudson. (For those unfamiliar, a *party line* was when multiple people had to share the same phone line, and the phone company cleverly marketed it as a "party" instead of a "nightmare." Ah, the wonders of marketing!) Day becomes furious when she overhears Hudson wooing women on the line, but when they meet in person, the sparks fly. If you loved 2003’s *Down With Love*, you absolutely need to add *Pillow Talk* to your must-watch list, pronto! You can rent it on Apple TV or Prime.
14. The Music Man (1962)

*The Music Man* was a major part of my childhood, often playing in the background during family get-togethers and holidays. The songs are unforgettable, especially "Til There Was You," and *The Simpsons* fans should note that this movie partly inspired Conan O'Brien's iconic monorail episode. In this musical, a con man (Robert Preston) tricks a small Iowa town, but he doesn't expect to fall for Marian, the librarian (Shirley Jones). The movie also features a very young Ron Howard, rocking his adorable red hair. You can rent this movie on Apple TV and Prime.
15. Charade (1963)
View this video on YouTubeUniversal Pictures / Via youtube.com
This comedy-thriller captures the spirit of an Alfred Hitchcock film, but with less of the intense, unsettling tension. Audrey Hepburn begins her adventure on a skiing trip in the French Alps, where she crosses paths with Cary Grant (yes, the age gap is pretty wild in this movie, but I’m choosing to overlook it). After her husband’s sudden murder, she’s thrust into a world where she’s chased by mysterious figures from his past, and things quickly spiral into an unexpected twist. One of my favorite moments features a hilarious game of "pass the orange without using your hands" at a Parisian nightclub. Ooh-la-la! You can stream it for free on Tubi.
