While the fantasy and fantasy adventure genre has always been a hit in literature, finding such films can be quite a challenge. As the trend evolves, I decided to compile a list of the top ten fantasy adventure movies.
You might have your own favorites that you’d love to see included here – don’t hesitate to share your suggestions and explain why they deserve a spot.
It’s important to note that fantasy adventure films must venture beyond the ordinary human experience (apologies to fans of *Princess Bride* and *The 13th Warrior*, but they didn’t quite meet the criteria). Without further ado, here’s the list of the top ten fantasy adventure movies.
10. The Wizard of Oz

This film is the original masterpiece. Featuring a wizard, both good and evil witches, and flying monkeys, it truly has everything. A timeless tale and a cinematic classic, this movie transcends being just a classic—it’s woven into the fabric of our culture. One of my favorite anecdotes is about my grandfather, who, as a boy, was so mesmerized by the transition to color in the theater that he stayed for a second showing, only to be grounded by his father, who had been waiting for over two hours.
9. The Dark Crystal

Many are familiar with and adore this film, yet a surprising number have never encountered it. Created using Muppets (though not the well-known ones), it delivers an extraordinary fantasy narrative that will captivate you. If you enjoyed *Labyrinth* but missed this gem, you should seek it out immediately! It follows the classic hero’s journey to save a nearly doomed world, and its brilliance will undoubtedly impress you.
8.
Labyrinth

This 1986 cult classic boasts a dedicated fanbase and is widely recognized for featuring David Bowie as the antagonist. A cherished favorite among those who grew up in the eighties, the film combines quirky Muppets, an enchanting world, and a compelling storyline to create a memorable experience. It also holds the distinction of being the final feature film directed by Jim Henson before his passing.
7. Pirates of the Caribbean

This film is arguably one of the best on this list, though its ranking is lower due to debates about its genre—whether it’s truly fantasy, historical supernatural, horror, or something else. However, with its elements of magic, skeletons, and curses, it’s hard not to be captivated. Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom deliver unforgettable performances, and while it may not feel like traditional fantasy, the trilogy’s memorable qualities earn it a well-deserved spot here.
6. Krull

Released in 1983, *Krull* is a heroic fantasy film with a dedicated cult following. Directed by Peter Yates, it’s celebrated for its powerful soundtrack by James Horner and features early appearances by now-iconic actors Liam Neeson and Robbie Coltrane. With its surreal visuals, imaginative scenes, and thrilling action, this movie has cemented its status as a cult classic.
5. Pan’s Labyrinth

This 2006 film surprised many viewers, as it diverged from the typical fantasy genre by targeting a mature audience. Its intense and graphic scenes of violence caught many off guard, especially those expecting a lighter fantasy experience. The film’s direction is masterful, its narrative dark and gripping, and the combination is nothing short of extraordinary. While not suitable for the faint-hearted or those seeking a lighthearted fantasy, it’s a cinematic masterpiece, evidenced by its ranking as the #54 movie of all time on IMDB.
4. The Never Ending Story

This film stands as one of the timeless classics in the fantasy genre. As a child, I watched it repeatedly, captivated by Atreyu’s adventures and Falkor, the luck dragon, who remains one of the most endearing characters ever created. Their quest to save the princess is unforgettable. Sebastian, the young reader, is drawn into their world, and the story’s magic never fades. It’s a rare gem that holds up even after countless viewings, making it a perennial favorite.
3. Lord of the Rings Trilogy

While each of the three films could easily claim a spot on a top ten list, I’ve grouped them together to make room for other exceptional movies. Each installment boasts an IMDB rating above 8.0, and it’s fitting that the book trilogy, which laid the foundation for modern fantasy adventure, inspired three films that achieved monumental global success.

2. Willow

Featuring Val Kilmer as a solitary swordsman and Warwick Davis as an unlikely Halfling hero with budding sorcerer abilities, this film is packed with magic, adventure, and prophecy. Beyond its heartwarming and emotional moments, it delivers plenty of humor and some impressive battle sequences. A tale of unlikely heroes overcoming evil, this groundbreaking film from two decades ago still impresses with its special effects and timeless story. It’s a delightful and high-quality cinematic experience.
1. Princess Mononoke

This remarkable anime fantasy follows Ashitaka, a prince striving to broker peace between humans and the forest. Filled with wild gods, spirits, and mythical creatures, the film’s artistry is breathtaking. At its release, it was the most expensive animation ever produced, blending hand-drawn artistry with cutting-edge 3-D computer imagery to create a truly unique and mesmerizing masterpiece.
