Interestingly, only three of these films are in English – I can't help but wonder what this says about the UK and USA when it comes to culinary excellence!
10. Big Night 1996, English

Primo and Secondo are two Italian brothers who migrate to America to run an Italian restaurant. Primo, the talented and temperamental chef, refuses to settle for ordinary dishes, determined to create culinary masterpieces. Secondo, the charming front-man, struggles to keep the restaurant financially viable, with little business except for a penniless artist who trades his paintings for meals. The owner of the neighboring Pascal's, a successful but unremarkable restaurant, offers a solution – he will arrange for a famous jazz musician to play a benefit concert at their restaurant. Primo sets to work preparing a spectacular feast for the brothers' big night...

Vianne Rocher and her young daughter are wanderers who face skepticism and opposition upon arriving in a conservative village in rural France, where they open a chocolate shop during Lent. In a German restaurant, Chef Martha Klein is the unquestioned authority over the kitchen staff, and any customer who dares criticize her culinary skills does so at their peril. Her life revolves around cooking, which she approaches with obsessive single-mindedness. Even when ordered to attend therapy, she can only talk about her work and the iron-fisted control she enjoys in the kitchen. However, her world is upended when her sister dies in a car accident, leaving behind an 8-year-old daughter, Lina. Martha takes her niece in and struggles to care for the headstrong child while seeking out her estranged father. Meanwhile, a new chef named Mario is hired, and Martha feels threatened by his unconventional ways. The challenges of her personal and professional life collide, forcing Martha to re-evaluate her attitudes and life choices as these intruders begin to change her life in profound ways.
6. God of Cookery1996, Cantonese
The God of Cookery, a renowned chef who has long been the arbiter of those seeking to challenge his title, loses his crown when a rival chef exposes him as a fraud and publicly shames him. As the new chef assumes the mantle of the God of Cookery, the dethroned chef embarks on a quest to regain his title, confront his adversary, and prove once and for all who truly deserves the title of the God of Cookery.

Interwoven into this primary story are several subplots emphasizing the significance of food, including a gangster who combines passion with cuisine and an elderly woman who terrorizes a shopkeeper by compulsively squeezing his products.
4. Like Water For Chocolate1992, SpanishTita and Pedro are in love and wish to marry, but Tita is bound by the responsibility of caring for her aging mother and is forbidden to marry. Pedro marries Tita's sister instead, but makes it clear that his true desire is to be near Tita. When Tita is forced to bake the wedding cake, the guests at the ceremony are struck with overwhelming sadness... Tita discovers that her cooking has mysterious powers that stir emotions in those who consume it.
3. The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover1989, English
The wife of a ruthless crime lord embarks on a hidden love affair with a kind-hearted bookseller, meeting in secret between meals at her husband's restaurant. This visually stunning yet brutally unyielding modern fable features food, color symbolism, passion, murder, torture, and cannibalism. It has been interpreted as an allegory for the era of Thatcherism.
2. Eat Drink Man Woman1994, Mandarin
Senior Master Chef Chu lives in a large home in Taipei with his three unmarried daughters: Jia-Jen, a chemistry teacher turned devout Christian; Jia-Chien, a high-flying airline executive; and Jia-Ning, a student who also works part-time at a fast food restaurant. The family’s life revolves around their weekly Sunday dinner ritual, which is intertwined with the romantic lives and personal developments of all the family members.
1. Babette’s Feast1987, Danish
In a 19th-century Danish village, two adult sisters live with their father, a revered pastor of a small, secluded Protestant church. Though both women have the chance to leave the village, they choose to remain, devoted to their father and their church. After their father's passing, a French refugee named Babette arrives at their door, seeking refuge. She offers to work as their maid, housekeeper, and cook. Years later, the sisters decide to commemorate their father's 100th birthday by hosting a dinner. Babette unexpectedly comes into money and begs the sisters to let her prepare the meal. Although hesitant due to her being a foreigner and a Catholic, the sisters agree. Babette then creates a lavish feast that astonishes the small congregation and a distinguished guest.
