Staying true to our tradition of crafting movie lists that stir up debate, we’ve compiled a list of the dullest films ever made. It seems Hollywood is more focused on quantity over quality these days. Below are the 10 most snooze-inducing movies – if you have a different opinion or your own pick for the most boring film, share it in the comments!
10. You’ve Got Mail
A big-chain bookstore owner begins to overshadow a small local bookstore owner, driving her out of business. Unbeknownst to them, they’ve been exchanging messages online without realizing each other’s identities. While they clash in person, their online connection grows stronger. He discovers her identity, but she remains unaware. As he develops feelings for her, she continues to despise him, leaving him to find a way to mend their relationship.
9. Legends of the FallColonel William Ludlow (Anthony Hopkins) and his three sons, Samuel, Tristan, and Alfred, reside in the Rocky Mountains of Montana, USA, during the early 20th century. Their close-knit bond is tested when Samuel introduces his fiancée, Susanna, into their lives. Alfred, the eldest son (Aidan Quinn), develops feelings for Susanna, while she finds herself drawn to Tristan (Brad Pitt).
8. AIIn this futuristic fairy tale, 'David,' a highly advanced robotic boy, dreams of becoming human to regain the love of his human mother, who abandoned him. Mirroring Pinocchio's quest, he embarks on a lengthy and tedious journey in search of the 'Blue Fairy,' who he believes can grant his wish.
7. Vanilla SkyDavid Aames takes his wealth, inherited publishing empire, and striking looks for granted, especially his relationships. His careless attitude backfires when a friend and occasional lover rejects his perspective on their connection. The film then takes a surreal, Lynchian turn, delving deep into Aames' troubled mind. Starring Tom Cruise, a figure often associated with Scientology.
6. The English PatientThis painfully slow narrative follows a Hungarian cartographer as he recalls the love affair that irrevocably changes his life. Severely burned in a plane crash over the Sahara Desert during WWII, he is cared for by a Canadian nurse grappling with her own past, while a thief haunted by a previous crime seeks closure.
5. The Black DahliaSet in 1940s Los Angeles, 'The Black Dahlia' follows detectives Bucky Bleichert and Lee Blanchard as they probe the gruesome murder of Elizabeth Short. Bucky discovers his girlfriend’s connection to the victim and uncovers a web of corruption and conspiracy within the police force.
4. Ripley’s Game
Tom Ripley – sophisticated, wealthy, and dangerously cunning – resides in a Venetian villa with Terry, his harpsichord-playing partner. When a former associate from Berlin’s criminal underworld seeks his help to eliminate a rival, Ripley, ever fascinated by human behavior, devises a twisted game to transform a gentle, unsuspecting picture framer into an assassin. Unfortunately, no video clip of this film is available, so I’ve chosen an image of growing grass, which is as thrilling as this movie and as compelling as its lead actor, John Malkovich.
3. Even Cowgirls Get The BluesSissy Hankshaw, born with unusually large thumbs, becomes a skilled hitchhiker, traveling across the US from a young age. She later becomes a model and is sent by her New York agent, ‘the Countess,’ to a California ranch to film a commercial featuring mating whooping cranes. There, she bonds with Bonanza Jellybean, a cowgirl at the ranch. Despite being a dull film, it comes from the acclaimed director Gus Van Sant.
2. SafeCarol, an upper middle-class homemaker, starts experiencing a series of unexplained health issues, including headaches, congestion, dry coughs, nosebleeds, vomiting, and breathing difficulties. Her family doctor dismisses her concerns and recommends psychiatric help. Later, an allergist diagnoses her with Environmental Illness, explaining that her immune system is overwhelmed by the constant exposure to everyday chemicals we inhale, consume, and absorb.
1. GerryUnfortunately, another Van Sant film makes the list: This movie explores the strained friendship of two young men as they embark on a desert hike without water or food. The film primarily features Matt Damon and Casey Affleck (Ben’s brother and the more talented actor) wandering aimlessly. While the cinematography is visually striking, the overall experience is painfully monotonous.
