When fans revisit or watch horror films and series, they eagerly anticipate the terrifying scenes, often enduring the slow buildup of conversations and plot progression. Iconic moments like Regan’s infamous head-spinning in The Exorcist, or Annie's shocking self-decapitation with a piano wire in Hereditary, never fail to deliver. Leatherface’s eerie skin-mask moment is another unforgettable scene. It's these unsettling moments that define the genre, and while some films and series are more chilling than others, each one offers that signature moment that hardcore fans love to watch repeatedly. 10. mother! – The Baby Scene
To start, mother! is not a film for the faint of heart. Starring Javier Bardem and Jennifer Lawrence as a couple whose peaceful life is turned upside down by a series of unexpected guests, the film becomes a whirlwind of horror. As their home is destroyed, viewers are confronted with surreal and disturbing visuals, such as a beating heart embedded in the wall (hinting that the house itself is alive). Among the many shocking moments, one includes a horrifying bloody organ found in the toilet, followed by extreme sibling conflicts and a woman shooting people at point-blank range.
One of the most disturbing moments in this story occurs after Jennifer Lawrence's character gives birth, only for her husband to allow the newborn to be passed around by a crowd of strange looters within their home. As Lawrence desperately tries to reclaim her baby, she is unsuccessful. The shocking and repulsive climax of this scene leaves a lasting impact.
9. Lovecraft Country – The Ghost with the Baby Head
From one unnerving baby scene to another, Lovecraft Country is packed with spine-chilling moments. This horror drama, based on the novel of the same name, redefines horror in the same way Riverdale tries to reshape dark teen dramas. Named after the legendary writer H.P. Lovecraft, Lovecraft Country revitalizes traditional horror elements with a fresh twist.
Among the many bizarre and eerie scenes in this series, one of the most haunting is the appearance of an adult ghost with the head of a baby. This grotesque entity features in an exorcism scene, scaring off intruders who will likely never make the same mistake again. Misha Green, the show's creator, mentioned that the ghost's concept was inspired by the infamous Tuskegee experiments.
A warning: the final moments of this clip are filled with a deeply disturbing and graphic scene.
8. The Orphanage – Tomás
The Orphanage is a Spanish horror film set in a long-abandoned orphanage, where both the living and the dead reside. What makes this movie stand out is its ability to create tension and fear without relying on cheap jump scares. By the end, viewers are left questioning whether the ghosts are real or simply a trick of the mind. One of the most unsettling moments is a simple yet haunting scene featuring a child wearing a sack-cloth mask, who has a penchant for staring and locking people in rooms. See it for yourself here:
7. Channel Zero – Tooth Child
Channel Zero, a horror anthology series that aired briefly on Syfy in 2016 and 2017, was renewed for two more seasons before being canceled in January 2019. The show is based on popular creepypastas from the internet, including Candle Cove, No-End House, Slender Man, The Dream Door, and many others.
Candle Cove, one of the most popular episodes of the series, tells the chilling tale of a cursed children's show that haunts a small town. The entire episode is filled with a sense of dread, and the creature introduced to the audience will linger in your thoughts long after. The Tooth Child is a truly unique horror monster, made entirely of hundreds of teeth with no clear facial features other than a small gap for a mouth and two empty eye sockets. In one disturbing scene, the toothy creature places a living person's fingers into its mouth.
You will never think of the toothfairy the same way again.
6. Paranormal Activity 2 – Exploding kitchen
Toby is the main creepy thing in Paranormal Activity and is instrumental in quite a few unsettling scenes. He sets a Ouija pointer on fire while the house is empty, creeps toward characters while they are sleeping, kills a man by bending him over backwards, makes the Xbox Kinect something people will be reluctant to use after watching the movie, and even bites people.
Toby seems most active in the kitchen for some reason. It is here that a sheet, seemingly with someone underneath it, falls into a puddle on the floor as the camera pans from side to side. It is also in the kitchen, in the second movie, that all the cabinet doors suddenly fly open at the same time, scaring one of the characters half to death.
5. The Haunting of Hill House – Horror in the dumbwaiter
In 2019, Netflix launched one of the most gripping horror series to hit screens in recent years. Viewers devoured all 10 episodes and eagerly shared their reactions on social media. Many were impressed, while others were downright terrified by the onslaught of ghosts, with the Bent Neck Lady becoming the most notorious, first introduced in a spine-chilling scene in the very first episode.
As the series progresses, the ghosts slowly reveal themselves, emerging from their hiding spots to terrorize the living. One of the most unsettling moments takes place in a dumbwaiter, where a disturbing ghost crawls toward the exit. This scene cleverly utilizes atmosphere and erratic lighting to create a sense of dread, resulting in a truly goosebumps-inducing experience.
4. The Conjuring 2 – The Nun Comes to Life
In The Conjuring 2, there are numerous subtle hints about the sinister presence of Valak, the terrifying nun. The movie also features many more jump scares compared to the first film, some effective, others a bit over the top. Demonologist Lorraine Warren encounters a ghostly boy, an entire ghost family, and, of course, the infamous Valak in a particularly harrowing scene.
The scenes with the nun are undoubtedly the most terrifying in this film, leaving audiences shaken on their first viewing. The moment when Valak emerges from the painting is brilliantly executed and continues to stand out among contemporary horror films. In this sequence, Warren, after encountering the ghostly family and boy, stumbles upon a covered mirror. When she uncovers it, she glances over her shoulder, only to see Valak materialize behind her in the reflection. What follows is pure nightmare fuel.
3. American Horror Story – School Shooting
American Horror Story can only be described as downright 'bonkers.' Each season has brought a unique twist to the world of horror, from redefined versions of 'white wedding' and corpses becoming life-sized toys, to a lizard girl, Mr. Guinea Pig, exorcisms, and the highly controversial Addiction Demon.
However, even more controversial than the Addiction Demon is the 'Piggy Piggy' episode, which aired during season 1 in 2011. It's believed that the episode took inspiration from the real-life Columbine tragedy, coming just a year before the Sandy Hook massacre. Despite the controversy, many fans consider the portrayal of the school shooting in this episode to be one of the most realistic on TV, complete with a shocking plot twist that reveals the gunman as a character familiar to the audience.
The scene where 15 students tragically lose their lives remains one of the most haunting and unforgettable moments in television history.
2. The Visit – Crawling Grandma
Comedy horrors are more than capable of delivering spine-chilling moments, as demonstrated in M. Night Shyamalan's The Visit. Two siblings travel to visit their grandparents for the first time, expecting a relaxing week. However, things take a strange turn when their grandparents start exhibiting bizarre behavior, including gross projectile vomiting, bizarre requests for one sibling to climb into an oven, and the horrifying sight of a dirty diaper smeared across the face of the other sibling.
The terror escalates when the siblings learn that their grandparents are not their real relatives, but rather, dangerous imposters. The unsettling atmosphere intensifies when the elderly woman begins stalking the children through a narrow crawl space beneath the house, crawling towards them in an unnerving, almost animalistic manner. This moment strips away the comedy, leaving viewers with an intense feeling of dread.
1. The Haunting of Bly Manor – Boy with No Face
A follow-up to Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor might not be as immediately terrifying as its predecessor, but it more than makes up for it with exceptional storytelling (despite the occasional odd accent). While it begins slowly with just a few eerie moments, the series ramps up the scares with creepy elements like a silent man with reflective glasses haunting an au pair, wheezing ghosts in period clothing, and a sinister lady in the lake who grabs anyone who dares cross her path.
The story takes an even darker turn when the adorable 8-year-old Flora, who owns a massive dollhouse, encounters a mysterious boy playing with it. As she gets closer to him, she is horrified to realize that he has no face. The chilling story behind these faceless ghosts unfolds, but nothing is more unsettling than Flora’s attempt to 'give the boy a story' by placing a new face on him—one that just so happens to resemble a disturbing, nightmarish doll.
