For centuries, humans have been both captivated and horrified by the supernatural. Despite this fear, many actively seek out encounters with the unknown. Yet, there are moments when the unexplained confronts them unexpectedly, leaving them utterly bewildered.
It’s no surprise that numerous paranormal reality TV series explore real-life experiences with ghosts, demons, and other spectral entities. While many episodes are cringe-worthy due to poor acting or awkward reenactments, some stand out as genuinely chilling and unforgettable.
Warning: Spoilers ahead!
10. Terror in the Woods

Forests can be terrifying environments. Hidden dangers, both real and imagined, often lurk unseen among the trees and dense foliage. Many hikers and campers have reported eerie encounters, while some homeowners in secluded wooded areas have discovered unsettling presences within their properties.
Bill and Charisse Stark’s harrowing tale was featured on Destination America’s *Terror in the Woods*. They thought they had struck gold when a cabin owner sold them a property near Red River Gorge, Kentucky, a geological reserve. Intended as their ideal retirement getaway, the cabin quickly became the setting for a series of inexplicable and frightening events.
Bill set up an outdoor security camera that recorded a mysterious green mist appearing and disappearing. The camera also captured a bright light emerging from the ground and floating away. A strange footprint was found in the snow outside, and their TV and PlayStation would occasionally turn on by themselves. Upon inspection, a slimy residue was discovered on the game console.
During their *Terror in the Woods* episode, it was disclosed that a terminally ill woman had passed away in the cabin. Even after the episode aired, reports of bizarre occurrences in the cabin continued to surface.
9. Ghost Hunters

*Ghost Hunters* aired from 2004 to 2016 and was brought back in 2019. Over its initial 11-season span, Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson explored haunted sites across the US and the UK. As founders of TAPS (The Atlantic Paranormal Society), they led a team of dedicated paranormal investigators.
Throughout countless episodes, the team encountered bizarre phenomena such as faces appearing in the dark, simultaneous EMF meter spikes, shadowy figures wandering aimlessly, and eerie voices echoing from basements. In the episode “The Armory,” while investigating the New Bedford Armory in Massachusetts, sound technician Frank DeAngelis suddenly collapsed backward. Unable to stand, he required immediate medical attention.
DeAngelis later described feeling as though something had passed through him. The experience left him so shaken that he resigned from the crew the following day, unable to continue with the investigations.
8. True Terror with Robert Englund

Who could be a more fitting host for a horror series than Freddy Krueger himself? *True Terror with Robert Englund* debuted in March 2020, succeeding *True Terror with George Takei*, and has garnered widespread acclaim. The show revives historical accounts of paranormal events, brought to life by Englund’s iconic presence and chilling demeanor.
The pilot episode featured a chilling account of a North Carolina man who dreamt of his impending death, complete with a countdown. Another story involved a New Orleans teenager trapped in a waking nightmare, leading to a horrifying end. (It’s almost as if Freddy Krueger himself could have been behind it, don’t you think?)
Among the most unsettling episodes is the one recounting the true story of the Axeman of New Orleans, one of America’s most notorious serial killers. The Axeman sparked a series of terrifying events, including a public challenge to the police and citizens through an open letter. The media published defiant responses from the public, and Italian American immigrant George Columbo decided to confront the killer, resulting in a nightmarish outcome.
7. Paranormal Lockdown

Picture spending 100 hours in a house infamous for its hauntings, inhabited by a volatile demonic presence. This is precisely what paranormal investigators Nick Groff and Katrina Weidman did for *Paranormal Lockdown* in 2016. The Black Monk House episode, a two-hour special, bridged the gap between the show’s first and second seasons.
The Black Monk House in Pontefract, England, has drawn numerous paranormal investigators, many of whom have witnessed objects floating and attacks by an invisible force. One girl was dragged upstairs in a scene straight out of a horror film, and some investigators, after encountering the house’s poltergeist, refused to remain on the property. Even the caretakers avoid staying in the house alone.
Nick and Katrina dedicated four days to capturing evidence of the poltergeist known as The Black Monk. Their efforts resulted in one of the series’ most gripping and spine-chilling episodes.
6. Unsolved Mysteries

Before the 2020 reboot, *Unsolved Mysteries* debuted in 1987, hosted by Robert Stack and others. Each episode delved into enigmatic cases such as murders, hauntings, disappearances, and accidents. Stack’s deep, resonant voice and the show’s iconic theme music left viewers with chills. Many episodes remain hauntingly memorable and continue to spark discussions on platforms like Reddit years after their original airing.
One particularly unforgettable episode from Season 7 recounted the tragic story of Pam and Eric Ellender. In 1991, the couple was found dead in their bed in Sulphur, Louisiana, while their infant daughter was discovered unharmed and crying in her room. Shockingly, the killers hosted a party in the couple’s home shortly after the murders, with the bodies still in the bedroom. Though the case was technically solved, the episode’s chilling details left viewers on the edge of their seats, making it a must-watch.
5. The Dead Files

Despite its grim title, *The Dead Files* features medium Amy Allan and former homicide detective Steve DiSchiavi investigating haunted locations at the request of individuals. Each episode follows Steve and Amy conducting separate investigations at a site, later sharing their discoveries in a dramatic reveal at the episode’s conclusion.
Although the show has faced criticism, it remains a fan favorite, with its 12th season premiering in 2020. One of the most chilling episodes involves Annie, a woman who has lived in her home for over a decade. She believes the hooded figures she frequently sees on her property have exacerbated her health issues. Annie also reported sightings of Native American spirits around her Cedar Park, Texas, home. Her friend Joel described seeing paper-like human-shaped figures hanging from trees and moving between branches.
4. Celebrity Ghost Stories

Even celebrities aren’t immune to paranormal encounters. So many stars have shared their unexplained experiences that entire TV shows have been dedicated to their ghostly tales.
The American version of *Celebrity Ghost Stories* premiered in 2009, featuring stars like Belinda Carlisle and Gina Gershon. Over the series, other celebrities, including Joan Collins, Alice Cooper, Kelly Osbourne, Nene Leakes, and Paula Abdul, recounted their eerie encounters, such as hearing the voices of ghostly children.
In one episode, shock rocker Marilyn Manson shared a chilling story from his teenage years involving the *Necronomicon*. A friend urged him to read the book’s incantations, and Manson believes this act disrupted the surrounding energy. He also recounted hearing a disembodied voice asking, ‘Do you believe in Satan?’
During his segment, Manson mentioned that his familiarity with the Bible made him realize the situation was ominous. He explained that he believes the energy of the deceased lingers on objects they were attached to in life.
3. Haunted

*Haunted* debuted on Netflix in 2018, showcasing real-life stories of individuals confronting malevolent forces. One standout episode from Season 2 features a nurse’s harrowing experience with a possessed patient at a nursing home, leaving many viewers deeply unsettled. However, the Season 1 episode *Slaughterhouse*, where two sisters reveal their father was a serial killer, is arguably the most terrifying.
The sisters described a childhood filled with the horrifying sounds of their father’s victims being murdered in their home. He would bring ‘strays’ from the streets and bars to their secluded forest property, where he disposed of the bodies. The sisters believe these atrocities left their house haunted and that their father’s dark rituals in the woods suggested he was possessed.
2. Paranormal Witness

*Paranormal Witness* is a highly acclaimed supernatural TV series that aired for five seasons from 2011 to 2016. The show explored a range of eerie tales, including the strange abilities of Don Decker, the haunting of the Capitol Theatre, encounters with werewolves, unsettling dolls, and demonic entities.
One of the most harrowing episodes recounts the tragic story of 23-year-old Christene Skubish, who fell asleep at the wheel while driving on Highway 50 in California in 1994. Her car plunged down a steep embankment, and she was traveling with her 3-year-old son, Nick. When Christene failed to reach her destination, her stepfather reported her missing. Five days later, Deborah Hoyt and her husband were driving along Route 50 when Deborah noticed a naked woman lying on the roadside, her arms covering her head. The couple alerted the police, but by the time authorities arrived, the woman had vanished.
This mysterious sighting led police to Christene’s wrecked car, where they found her body and her son Nick, alive but severely dehydrated, curled up in the passenger seat. Doctors later confirmed that Nick would not have survived much longer in the car.
This episode of *Paranormal Witness* is both deeply chilling and emotionally devastating, making it one of the series’ most memorable.
1. Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction

Similar to *Unsolved Mysteries*, *Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction* developed a dedicated fanbase after its 1997 debut. Each episode presented five stories, a mix of factual accounts and fictional tales, challenging viewers to discern which were real.
The series’ premiere episode, *The Apparition*, remains one of its most haunting. It follows a woman who, after recovering from a nervous breakdown, begins seeing the ghost of a deceased woman in a second-floor mirror. The specter attempts to communicate but is never able to speak.
One night, an intruder breaks into the woman’s home and chases her upstairs. When he catches sight of the ghost in the mirror, he is terrified and flees.
Despite airing years ago, this episode remains deeply unsettling and is a must-watch for fans of the genre. The closing reveal that the story was based on true events adds an extra layer of eeriness.
