To make your reading experience more enjoyable, I've carefully chosen a mix of spine-chilling scenes that will make you jump and eerie moments that are more subtly disturbing. This list isn't ranked, but it's ordered according to my personal favorites. Feel free to leave a comment at the end of the list with your own standout creepy scenes—you never know, it could inspire a future sequel!
10. Mulholland Drive—Smile, Boomer...

Picture the direction: 'smile.' So simple, so harmless. Yet in an early moment of Mulholland Drive, David Lynch shows us that the act of two boomers smiling can become one of the most disturbing things you’ll witness all day—at least until they reappear in a later scene, which is just as weird but even more unsettling! I've always been curious about the deeper meaning behind this scene (anyone care to share their thoughts in the comments?). Regardless, Lynch is a master, and this film is a must-see.
9. Signs—The Birthday Party

The Sixth Sense was a remarkable film, featuring stellar performances from Toni Collette. Two years later, M. Night Shyamalan followed it up with Signs, starring the unstoppable Mel Gibson and the incredible Joaquin Phoenix. One particular scene from the movie has become one of the most replayed moments in cinema history—rightly so. Joaquin’s reaction? That’s pretty much how the entire world responded when they saw this scene. While watching it on YouTube with the pause button takes away some of the eeriness, Shyamalan’s brilliant placement of this scene in the film makes it one of the creepiest moments to experience firsthand.
8. Sixth Sense—Under The Bed Scene

Speaking of M. Night Shyamalan, did this scene from The Sixth Sense make you jump out of your skin the first time you saw it? It certainly did for me. This film is truly something special: it takes a real-life horror concept (münchausen-by-proxy) and weaves it into a classic ghost story with an incredible twist. While Shyamalan’s direction is superb, he’s never quite recaptured the magic of this movie. Embedding clips from this film seems to be disabled universally, but if you want to see this iconic jump-scare, you can find it here.
7. Zodiac—The Posters

Zodiac is a masterful film that any fan of serial killer lore must watch. If you haven’t seen it yet, go watch it today (and avoid the clip above until you do). In one of the creepiest scenes, Jake Gyllenhaal’s character thinks he’s uncovered a clue and comes across a movie poster that he believes reveals the killer’s identity. He tracks down a man he believes can help him find the person who drew the poster, as the handwriting seems to match the killer’s. Now, watch the scene: it’s absolutely chilling. This moment, along with the tense scenes that follow in the basement, ranks among the most uncomfortable experiences I’ve had while watching a film. David Fincher truly has a gift for creating suspense.
6. The Blair Witch Project—Man In The Corner

It turns out the creators of Blair Witch only needed a handheld camera and an exceptional marketing campaign that convinced audiences the film was real footage, giving us one of the scariest films of all time—without relying on typical horror movie tricks like sudden sound effects to startle you. The final climax of the film is simply the haunting image above. If you haven't watched the entire movie, this scene might not have the same impact, as it relies on a slow-building tension that is essential to its creepy effect.
5. Silence Of The Lambs—Night Vision

If you found the basement scenes in Zodiac chilling, this moment will blow your mind! In this scene, FBI Agent Starling enters the home of the man we know to be the killer. His house is a terrifying mess, resembling a horror museum with its dark, cluttered atmosphere. Starling, completely out of her depth, begins a tense game of cat and mouse in the dark—where only the killer can see. Watch out for that hand! Silence Of The Lambs is a horror classic everyone must experience.
4. Alien—Chest Burst

I suspect this is the one scene that almost everyone reading has seen. The moment when the alien bursts out of a human chest horrified audiences when it was first released. It was a completely fresh and unexpected shock. I recently rewatched the entire series, and even after all these years, I still had to cover my eyes during this part.
3. Hereditary—THAT Scene

SPOILER ALERT: The scene shown above contains major spoilers for a pivotal moment in the film. If you haven’t seen Hereditary, this clip will ruin a major plot twist. And whether you’ve seen it or not, it will haunt you. This scene is included on this list because it is completely unique in the history of horror films. But it's not just unnerving—it's brutally horrifying, gruesome, violent, and disturbing. Do yourself a favor and skip this video. Trust me, you will regret it. The actor driving in this scene has since shared that participating in this film gave him post-traumatic stress disorder.
2. The Conjuring—Closet Scene

If you’ve been following the comments on this list, you’ve probably seen me mention this scene before. I’m not one to watch horror movies in theaters, but I made an exception for this one. I was sitting in a packed theater, and despite the crowd, it was eerily silent. When this scene came up, just at the right moment, I let out the loudest, highest-pitched scream, and I literally shot out of my seat. I scared not only the entire theater but myself as well. Thankfully, I don’t usually scream like a teenage girl at the movies—especially considering I’m over six feet tall with a deep voice! Watch the scene... and try not to scream.
1. Carrie—Final Scene

Every single time I revisit this movie, the final scene still leaves me in shock. Carrie is an undeniable classic in the horror genre, and for me, it holds a special spot as the first horror movie I ever saw. It's not only remarkable because of the nostalgia but also because of its impeccable production and stellar performances. This scene I've picked is a perfect representation of the horror elements we often see in today's films. While most of Carrie centers around her telekinetic abilities, this moment introduces a supernatural twist. A word of advice: skip the recent Carrie remake—this original version is the one that truly stands the test of time.
