Many TV shows feature characters who are only occasionally heard or partially seen, often referenced by others. Though these characters remain unseen, they bring humor to the show and have a notable impact on the storyline and other characters. Here are 10 such characters who remain hidden from view.
10. Mrs. Wolowitz – The Big Bang Theory

Mrs. Wolowitz, though never seen on screen, was a constant presence on The Big Bang Theory. Her domineering relationship with Howard, as well as her connections with Bernadette, Raj, and Stuart, left a strong impression despite her lack of physical appearances.
After Carol Ann Susi, the actress behind Mrs. Wolowitz, passed away from cancer, the show followed suit, having her character also pass away. In ‘The Leftover Thermalization,’ the main characters reflect on Mrs. Wolowitz, showcasing her powerful influence on the group despite her complete absence on screen.
9. Father Bigley – Father Ted

Father Bigley is an offscreen character whose peculiar backstory is shared through strange anecdotes from others. Descriptions of him are vivid, with one saying his 'puffy fish lips' are disproportionate to the rest of his face, and at one point, people thought he was dead—until they realized he just had the appearance of being deceased.
Despite only brief glimpses of Father Bigley, various wild stories circulate about him. For instance, he 'befriended a priest involved in arms trading with Iraq,' 'gave a sermon at OJ Simpson’s wedding,' and eventually ended up in a care home after 'starting fires,' an act he allegedly couldn't stop.
8. The Scranton Strangler – The Office

The Scranton Strangler was an ongoing mystery on The Office, spanning seasons 6 to 9. The elusive serial killer, whose identity is never fully revealed, becomes a subject of discussion at Dunder Mifflin, with Toby even serving as a juror in the trial of George Howard Scrub, who was convicted of these strangling crimes.
Despite Scrub's conviction, Toby remains uncertain about whether he's truly the right man for the crime, sparking various fan theories regarding the identity of the Scranton Strangler. Mose and Creed are among the top suspects, with hints within the show suggesting they may have killed before. However, the most widely discussed theory posits that Toby himself might be the real Scranton Strangler. The theory gained traction when The Office's official YouTube channel released a video titled ‘Making a Strangler,’ exploring this idea.
7. Bob Sacamano – Seinfeld

Bob Sacamano is a character who exists solely through the outlandish stories told by Cosmo Kramer. Like Father Bigley, we only hear about him sporadically, but Bob plays a more significant role in the lives of other characters, notably giving Kramer—and by extension, George—faulty condoms, leaving George worried he may have gotten someone pregnant.
Additionally, we hear countless bizarre tales about Bob through Kramer’s recounts. According to Kramer, Bob once spent time in a mental institution where 'electroshock had no effect on him because his synapses were so large.' Bob also 'contracted rabies,' 'made a fortune from the toy paddles with the ball and rubber band,' and after a hernia operation gone wrong, he 'now sits in a chair by a window repeating “my name is Bob.”'
6. Ms Sara Bellum – The Powerpuff Girls

A common cartoon trope involves hiding the faces of adult characters, as seen with Mammy Two Shoes in *Tom & Jerry* and Wizard Kelly in *The Proud Family*. Ms. Sara Bellum from *The Powerpuff Girls* is another example, instantly recognizable despite never showing her face. Her large hair, red outfit, and curvy figure made her identity clear without needing a visual of her face. Though other characters describe her as attractive, it’s her intelligence that stands out, with the Mayor calling her the ‘brains behind the man.’
In the 10th anniversary episode, ‘The Powerpuff Girls Rule!!!’, Ms. Bellum’s face is shown, but only briefly. When it’s revealed, her hair covers one eye, and the other remains closed, so her eye color and full face are still hidden. This brief moment still keeps much of her appearance a mystery, leaving fans with only a partial glimpse.
5. Vera Peterson – Cheers

Vera Peterson frequently appears in Norm’s phone conversations at the bar. Whether he’s joking about her or avoiding her, most of what we know about Vera comes through Norm’s perspective, as he’s the one telling the stories.
One memorable moment is from the 'Thanksgiving Orphans' episode, where we nearly catch a glimpse of Vera’s face, only for it to be covered by a chocolate crème pie. Fun fact: Vera is voiced by Bernadette Birkett, who happens to be married to George Wendt, the actor who plays Norm!
4. Ugly Naked Guy – Friends

We don't know much about Ugly Naked Guy, but he's a frequent topic of discussion among the six friends until he moves out in season 5. Rather than seeing the view from Monica and Rachel’s apartment, we only witness the group's reactions to spying on him (often in shock). There are a couple of instances where we catch glimpses of him: once when the group uses a giant poking device to check if he's alive (‘The One With The Giant Poking Device’) and again when he answers the door to Ross (‘The One Where Everyone Finds Out’).
Not much is revealed about the identity of Ugly Naked Guy, likely because the main group knows very little about him. What we do know is that, after 1993, he started gaining weight. As Phoebe points out in ‘The One With The Flashback,’ 'Cute Naked Guy’s really starting to put on weight.' The most we discover about him is his varied hobbies and activities, including playing the cello, trying gravity boots, purchasing a ThighMaster, owning a cat, and his infamous Thanksgiving date that ended in ‘Ugly Naked Dancing.’
3. Maris – Frasier

Maris Crane is possibly the most well-known off-screen character we never actually meet. We hear vivid accounts of Niles' first wife from the Crane family. She is described as being extremely underweight, with Roz once confusing her for a hat rack. Maris also has a number of peculiar medical conditions, such as an inability to produce saliva and slight webbing between her fingers.
Maris is widely disliked by both Frasier and Martin, and even Lilith shares a negative opinion of her. Her presence significantly impacts Niles' storyline, especially during their divorce. Although physically frail, Maris' actions are frequently malicious and self-serving. Her behavior escalates from her affair while still married to Niles to being arrested on suspicion of murdering a man she was romantically involved with. Her wild and unpredictable arc concludes with her fleeing to her family's private island, where she cannot be extradited.
2. Charles 'Charlie' Townsend – Charlie's Angels

In contrast to the other characters on this list, the audience never sees Charlie's true identity, and none of the characters ever meet him face-to-face. In Charlie's Angels, even the Angels themselves are unaware of what Charlie truly looks like.
Charlie remains an enigmatic figure. Although the Angels work with him regularly, they only know him by his voice. With numerous enemies, Charlie goes to great lengths to protect his identity, allowing only Bosley to see his face. In the show, the Angels only hear his voice through a speaker box when assigned cases, and viewers are only shown his back, parts of his body, but never his face.
1. Stan Walker – Will & Grace

Unlike many other unseen characters on this list, we get a much clearer view of Stan Walker, mainly through his wife Karen. His silhouette makes a brief appearance, and another time, we catch a glimpse of his arms attempting to reach out to Karen while Will is in the room ('New Will City'). He's often described as being exceedingly overweight and is rumored to wear a toupee that he never bothers to wash.
Stan is at the center of several bizarre and complicated story arcs, the most notable being his arrest for tax evasion, his tumultuous divorce from Karen, his 'death' and subsequent funeral, and the surprising revelation that he was alive all along, having faked his death to escape the mob. Quite an intricate backstory for a man we never actually see!
