The most memorable adult birthday party I hosted was my recent 35th. I invited friends and family to my new backyard for a simple yet fun celebration featuring food, drinks, and good times. The theme was basic but effective: Dips & Drinks.
I asked each guest to bring either a dip or a drink to share. No guidelines, no restrictions. Despite the open-ended request, only one dip—onion—was repeated, and both versions were a hit.
This format is perfect for birthday and holiday parties, but for a Super Bowl party? It’s a total game-changer. Dips are the ultimate food for watching football. No utensils needed, and you can shovel dip into your mouth while staying focused on the game, halftime show, or commercials.
Many classic football snack favorites are already dips—guacamole, spinach and artichoke dip, cowboy caviar, cheese dip—and those that aren’t can easily be turned into one with minimal effort. (Pizza dip works great, and so do any Buffalo-style dips.)
Throwing a Dips & Drinks Super Bowl party adds an extra layer of friendly competition. People will get inventive when given the right framework, and dip is the tastiest structure to spark creativity.
I’ll admit, guests tend to lean more toward the dip side of a Dips & Drinks party rather than the drinks, but that’s perfectly fine. Everyone will bring their favorite six-pack, you can add in some budget-friendly beer and even a bit of cheap, lowercase-c champagne. And of course, someone will bring a themed cocktail. (That person might be a little nerdy, but they’ll have a fantastic bar cart to back it up.)
