The main purpose of being a Thanksgiving guest is to enjoy the meal and have engaging conversations. I never expect a gift, though receiving one is always a pleasant surprise.
I wouldn't mind if every guest brought a bottle of wine, flowers, or any other typical host gift—especially when guests are contributing food. After all, food itself is a gift, and I never expect anyone to bring a dish and an extra token of appreciation. However, if you're thinking of a thoughtful yet simple gift for your host, I’d suggest bringing a bouquet of fresh herbs. While I appreciate wine, flowers, or something more practical like a new tea towel or serving utensils, I’d be genuinely thrilled if someone showed up with a bundle of herbs that I could use on the spot as needed.
A bunch of fresh herbs makes a wonderful host gift. I usually manage to buy enough herbs for my dishes, but often forget to get some for garnishing. It would be such a thoughtful gift to have my herb supply replenished at the last minute. Some sage for frying into crispy bits, rosemary sprigs for a cocktail garnish, thyme leaves for the salad dressing—all these would be perfect additions to my busy Thanksgiving kitchen.
And, of course, they look beautiful. Choose a selection of herbs that capture the essence of Thanksgiving—sage, rosemary, thyme—then enhance it with fresh bay leaves, marjoram, or a touch of mint. Bundle them together like a bouquet, or for a larger arrangement, place them in a vase or mason jar with some water to keep them fresh.
