Though few things, especially right now, make me feel proud to be American, there's still plenty worth toasting to. The Americano cocktail is an American creation, so we can definitely celebrate that. And what better way to do so than with an Americano, a drink originally from Italy, named after its popularity among American expatriates (immigrants!) during Prohibition.
I’m a big fan of this drink for several reasons. For one, it’s not too strong, thanks to the mix of vermouth and soda water. It also features Campari, which I love. The deep red hue fits so many 4th of July themes, whether you're honoring the American Revolution of 1783 or maybe even fantasizing about the next one. Like most of my go-to cocktails, it’s got that perfect bittersweet balance, is easy to make, and requires just three ingredients. Be sure to choose a quality vermouth, like Carpano Antica Formula. To make it, you'll need:
1 1/2 ounces Campari
1 1/2 ounces sweet vermouth
2-3 ounces soda water
Add the first two ingredients into a lowball glass with ice and give it a gentle stir. Top off with seltzer, making sure to stick to a 1:1:2 ratio (no more than three ounces total). Raise your glass to the country you cherish, or perhaps to revolution, depending on your current mood.
