I can enjoy an old fashioned no matter the season, but it’s always a treat to modify drinks to suit the weather. While a dark rum old fashioned is already fantastic, a pineapple rum old fashioned takes it up a notch.
If the idea of “pineapple rum” seems overly sweet to you, I urge you to clear that thought from your mind. While I usually don’t recommend specific bottles, the Plantation Pineapple rum is a must-have for any bar cart. Its vibrant pineapple flavor is beautifully balanced with subtle notes of smoke and cloves, making it one of the most refined fruit-flavored spirits I’ve ever encountered. It shines in a daiquiri, but in a rum old fashioned, it truly excels. To make it, you’ll need:
2 ounces Plantation Pineapple rum (or your preferred dark rum)
1 teaspoon simple syrup
3 dashes of bitters (Angostura or lime)
Combine all ingredients in a lowball glass and stir the liquids together. Add a large ice cube and continue stirring in the glass until the mixture is well-chilled. For a garnish, a bright red maraschino cherry will do the trick. Sip and enjoy another round.
