My fridge is packed with syrups. Besides the essential maple, there’s a budget-friendly 'pancake syrup,' some berry honey, a bottle of simple syrup, and honey syrup. While the last two have traditionally been used in cocktails, everyone should have them on hand—whether they drink or not.
The magic of cocktail syrups lies in their effortless solubility. Unlike granulated sugar or pure honey, these liquid sweeteners blend seamlessly without requiring excessive stirring or heat, making them a kitchen essential.
They're incredibly simple to prepare. For classic simple syrup, heat equal parts sugar and water (one cup each) in a saucepan over medium-high heat until fully dissolved. For honey syrup, mix three parts honey with one part hot water. Both can be stored in the fridge indefinitely.
Hydration has never been my strong suit, but these syrups make it easier. Lately, I’ve been whipping up single-serving lemonade and limeade-style drinks, sweetening them on the spot with a quick squeeze of honey or simple syrup, depending on my mood. I might start adding ginger syrup too—because once the weather heats up, ginger lemonade is going to be a refreshing treat.
On the food front, I’ve been using honey syrup in vinaigrettes and stirring simple syrup into sauces—both peanut and marinara (let’s keep that a secret from my Italian boyfriend). Sugar enhances everything, even savory dishes, and just a teaspoon of syrup can bring a meal together beautifully.
Are you a fan of iced coffee or tea? Then simple syrup is a must-have. There’s no way around it. Sure, you can quickly whip up a little bit of the stuff in the microwave, but it’s far easier to make a whole bottle and lazily swirl it into your morning cold brew. Life is already complicated—let syrups make it a little simpler.
