They are best enjoyed fresh, often over the sink to avoid messy spills. If you choose to cook with peaches, the possibilities are endless. While they shine in classic desserts like cobblers and buckles, they also add a unique twist to savory dishes such as Caprese salads or even as a topping on pizzas. However, peaches have a short shelf life after being harvested and are prone to bruising because of their tender skin. Although peach season is brief, we’ve gathered practical tips to help you extend the freshness of your peaches at home. Read on to discover how!
Tips for Storing Peaches
Begin by assessing the ripeness of your peaches. Firm peaches with little fragrance are not yet ripe. Place them on the counter at room temperature in a single layer (to prevent bruising) for a few days until they ripen. A ripe peach will be fragrant and slightly soft when gently pressed.
Ripe peaches are best consumed immediately, but if that’s not possible, store them in the refrigerator. The cold temperature will slow ripening and extend their freshness. Avoid washing peaches until you’re ready to eat them, as their natural skin coating helps preserve the fruit.
Storing Sliced Peaches
Whenever possible, keep peaches whole, as cutting them accelerates ripening. However, properly stored cut peaches can last up to four days in the fridge. To prevent browning, sprinkle them with lemon or lime juice, then store them in an airtight container before refrigerating.
Freezing Peaches: Is It Possible?
Absolutely, you can freeze peaches! Freezing is an excellent way to reduce food waste and enjoy the taste of summer peaches year-round. Properly frozen peaches can remain fresh in the freezer for 6 to 12 months.
- Boil a pot of water and prepare an ice bath nearby.
- Score a small X at the base of each peach using a knife.
- Blanch the peaches in boiling water for 30 seconds, then transfer them to the ice bath using a slotted spoon.
- Peel the skins off easily by hand after blanching.
- Remove the pits, slice the peaches, and arrange them in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Freeze until solid, approximately three hours.
- Transfer the frozen slices to a sealed freezer-safe bag and store them in the freezer.
