There’s always room for pumpkin pie! While homemade is often the best, there are times when you simply don’t have the energy to bake. Having a stash of frozen pies for those surprise guests is a smart move. The Kitchn did the hard work of taste-testing many, and here are the top picks.
Anna Goldfarb bravely sampled six different frozen pumpkin pies, evaluating the quality of their crusts, the richness of the filling, and how easy they were to prepare. For her full review, follow the link below, but here are a couple of solid choices for those pie emergencies:
Edwards Pumpkin Crème Pie ($6.49): A rich mousse-like filling with a robust “pumpkin pie spice” flavor, paired with a ginger-vanilla cookie crumb crust that’s “crispy, buttery, and perfectly salty in spots.”
Marie Callender’s Pumpkin Pie ($6.49): This pie impressed Goldfarb with its “flawless” classic pastry crust and creamy, custard-like filling that nearly mimics homemade perfection.
Avoid the Mrs. Smith’s Original Flaky Crust Pumpkin Pie (with its sour crust and bland filling) and Sara Lee’s Oven Fresh Pumpkin Pie (which suffers from a crumbly crust and a strange, gel-like filling). Steer clear of those and grab one (or both!) of the recommended pies above.
