While I appreciate McDonald's, I'd never claim it's the best place for a quality burger. McDonald's is a unique entity—not quite food in itself. (When you eat a McNugget, you're not eating chicken.) However, they do get a few things right, and one of those things is mincing their onions on their cheeseburgers into super tiny bits.
This approach has many benefits. For starters, it ensures an even spread of onion. When onions are left in their natural ring form, they can only cover so much area. If you were to arrange onion rings to top the entire patty, you'd end up with too much onion. By chopping the onion into small pieces, you can distribute them evenly, delivering just the right amount of sharpness.
Another advantage is preventing slippage. Depending on how your bite works, large chunks of toppings can sometimes fall off the burger when you take a bite. These oversized onion pieces often end up falling into unfortunate places, like your cleavage. This problem is eliminated when the onion is finely chopped. Simple solution.
Other ingredients that work better when finely chopped on a burger include pickles (or you could simply use dill relish) and lettuce (large leaves tend to slip off). Chopping them ensures a balanced texture and flavor distribution, while keeping everything in place until it reaches your mouth. As someone who likes to control exactly what I eat and when, I find the extra effort of using a knife totally worth it.
