Sharp kitchen knives are essential throughout the year, but they’re especially crucial during Thanksgiving. You’ll not only be chopping more vegetables and herbs than usual, but you'll also need to carve up a large bird with bones to consider.
Before you finalize your menu, before you start making (and freezing) pie crusts, and before you even begin researching 'heritage birds,' make sure to take your knives—and your kitchen shears—to get sharpened without delay.
Don’t attempt sharpening them yourself (unless you're already an expert), and don’t assume your knives are 'probably fine.' Unless you're someone who critiques knife videos online, your knives likely aren't in top shape and definitely aren't ready for the intense prep Thanksgiving requires. Visit a professional to get them sharpened properly. And if you plan to spatchcock the bird, your shears need attention too, as bird bones are tougher than you might remember.
If you're heading to your parents' house for Thanksgiving, remind them to sharpen their knives—older knives tend to get dull over time. (Or maybe it’s just my parents who refuse to sharpen a blade?) If they don't, get yourself a knife roll and bring your own (freshly sharpened) tools.
Take care of your knives now, before you get caught up in meal planning, turkey buying, and the chaos of 'company is coming' cleaning. Sharpen them well in advance, for the battle of the bird awaits.
