Toast can surprisingly turn into a stylish sweet treat, especially when topped with frangipane (also known as bostock) or brownie batter. I'm constantly on the lookout for my next show-stopping toast, and I think I might have found the ultimate one. Today, I introduce lazy dulce de leche toast, and honestly, it's the best toast I've ever tasted.
Dulce de leche is a rich milk caramel spread created by slowly simmering sweetened condensed milk. It’s made from just one ingredient, but the gradual heat transforms the runny dairy into a thick, butter-like spread. The color shifts from creamy white to a warm latte brown, and the flavors of milk and sugar deepen with hints of toasted malt. The downside? Making dulce de leche traditionally takes hours (around two to three hours of cooking and another hour for cooling), and there’s always a risk of the milk exploding if not done carefully.
Lazy dulce de leche toast is the perfect solution for impatient dulce de leche fans like me. It only takes 30 seconds to prepare and just three minutes to cook. No need to spend hours cooking or worrying about potential can explosions. The air fryer makes this snack incredibly fast with minimal cleanup required.
Preheat your air fryer to 350°F on the ‘air fry’ setting. Open a can of sweetened condensed milk or use any leftovers you have in the fridge. Spread a few tablespoons of the sticky milk onto one side of a slice of bread. I opted for thick-cut brioche, but any type of bread will work. Place the bread, milk-side up, in the air fryer and cook for 3 minutes. Don’t forget to set the timer, as it can go from caramelized to burnt in no time. Once done, enjoy your dulce de leche toast right away.

Just a heads-up, this isn’t true dulce de leche (the lazy version has its perks), but cutting corners can be a win. As soon as you take a bite, you’ll notice the top layer has that rich, caramelized, butterscotch-like flavor of dulce de leche, with a creamy layer of sweetened condensed milk beneath. The flavor combo—toast meets cream—is delightful, but it’s the texture that really shines. Unlike traditional dulce de leche, which stays moist, the condensed milk exposed to the air fryer heat crisps and caramelizes at the edges, creating a milk-candy crust with a creamy underside. This, combined with the soft interior of the bread, gives the toast the illusion of having a custard-like middle.
Lazy dulce de leche toast is a real indulgence. For a simple twist that tastes like banana candy toast, just add some sliced bananas to the bread and spread condensed milk over the top before air frying.
