For those who frequently prepare spaghetti squash at home, a simple tweak is about to revolutionize your cooking routine. BuzzFeed’s food editor Christine Byrne has uncovered an incredibly smart method for enhancing the flavor of spaghetti squash: Cut it into rings before baking.
For long, flavorful, non-mushy spaghetti squash strands, slice the squash into rings and roast them at 400ºF for 40 minutes. By cutting the squash into rings prior to baking, the strands remain long and resemble actual spaghetti more closely.
Upon examining spaghetti squash closely, you'll notice that the strands actually run across the vegetable. When you cut the squash in half before roasting— a method most people typically use— you're disrupting the long, spaghetti-like strands. This technique can also cause the squash to steam too much, making it too soft and watery.
Keep in mind: the rind of spaghetti squash can be tough to cut, and this approach demands extra knife work. To make preparation easier, opt for a smaller squash, or make sure you have your sharpest knife (or even a cleaver) on hand for a larger one.
