A splash of Fernet over ice, seasoned with a pinch of salt, is my go-to nightcap. But that drink marks the end of a great evening, not the beginning (or even the middle). Since I wanted to savor the salty flavor all night long, I decided to transform it into a martini.
This drink, which we call 'Bitter Tears,' is a chilled gin cocktail infused with the bitter, herbal flavor of Fernet (replacing vermouth) and a few drops of saline (combine 1/2 teaspoon of Maldon salt with 1 teaspoon of water). It’s not for everyone, but it’s perfect for those who enjoy bold, bitter, and dry martinis. To make it, you'll need:
2 1/2 ounces of gin
1/2 ounce Fernet-Branca
3 drops of saline
Combine all ingredients in a stirring glass filled with ice, and stir thoroughly for at least 60 times. Once done, strain the mixture into a coupe glass, take a deep breath, and savor the moment.
