I can always count on remembering pantry essentials like garlic and onions at the store, but other items often slip my mind, particularly shallots. Fortunately, if you're following a recipe that calls for shallots but find yourself without them, there's a simple solution we’ve discovered.
Inspired by a tip from Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking, Dana Velden from The Kitchn has devised a brilliant hack for substituting shallots:
Over the years, I’ve adapted [Julia Child’s] method by placing minced onions in a sieve and gently pouring hot water over them for about 15 seconds while holding it over the sink.
