I've created plenty of cocktails over the years, but I struggle with remembering exact ratios. That's why I really appreciate recipes that use equal parts ingredients—even someone like me, with a very scattered memory, can manage that.
The Gin & It is one of those drinks that's easy to recall and, fortunately, happens to be exactly my kind of thing. It's a combination of gin (good) and Italian vermouth (also good), which is where the 'It' comes from. If you're feeling playful, you can call it a 'gin innit,' much like a Love Island contestant would. (And yes, I've been showcasing a lot of Italian vermouth-based cocktails recently, but trust me, it’s for a good reason—you need to use that bottle before it goes bad.)
This cocktail is a cross between a 50/50 martini and a Martinez (the predecessor to the martini). It's delicious and slightly less potent than a typical martini, which I find especially appealing during the holiday season. I tend to crave richer, sweeter drinks when it gets cold, so this is my go-to winter cocktail. Just like last week’s cocktail, you'll want top-quality gin and vermouth since you'll get a full taste of both. I like mine served up (like a martini), but it also works well on a big ice cube or with a twist of orange peel. To make it, you'll need:
1 1/2 ounces dry gin
1 1/2 ounces Italian vermouth
2 dashes orange bitters
Combine all ingredients in a mixing glass filled with ice and stir until thoroughly chilled. Strain into a pre-chilled coupe glass and enjoy.
