During my younger years, when I had the space to host gatherings, I always appreciated guests bringing something along. Whenever someone asked what they could contribute, I’d jokingly suggest more alcohol, as running out of drinks felt like a disaster in my early 20s. However, I often ended up with subpar beer, cheap wine, and once, an unforgettable bottle of dragonfruit vodka. I soon realized I should have requested something practical, like a warm dip or a tasty snack.
Don’t get me wrong—alcohol is great, but the true MVPs of any party are those who bring snacks that comfort and satisfy tipsy guests. These nostalgic, easy-to-enjoy treats not only curb excessive drinking but are also a hit with everyone, whether they’re sober or not.
Classic chocolate chip cookies
Our very own Melissa Kirsch is a firm believer in the magic of Entenmann’s chocolate chip cookies, while I have a soft spot for the tub of Trader Joe’s little crispy bois. However, if you truly want to steal the show at any gathering, follow the lead of Mara Wilson (known for her role in Matilda) and arrive with a batch of cookies that are freshly baked and still warm.
Pizza rolls and similar snacks
Cookbook author and adventurous podcaster Laurie Woolever is not only brilliant but also the ideal guest. She never fails to bring Pizza Rolls (always a crowd-pleaser) and Bagel Dogs. Try to think of a more iconic pair—I challenge you.
La Croix (or another flavored sparkling water)
While La Croix enthusiasts often face some teasing, I can confidently say I’d be far less hydrated without this subtly flavored seltzer. As Nick Douglas points out, bringing it to a party is a win-win: it provides non-drinkers with a refreshing option and helps drinkers stay hydrated while they indulge.
Capri Sun
Watching tipsy adults attempt to poke the tiny straw into the small pouch is endlessly entertaining, as is sipping from the squeezable bag. Plus, like La Croix, it’s a non-alcoholic option, which is always a welcome addition.
Ingredients for root beer floats
Michelle Woo’s father-in-law is a legend for bringing root beer and vanilla ice cream to every gathering he attends. If I were in charge of awarding medals, he’d deserve two: one for spreading immense joy and another for reminding us all of the simple delight of root beer floats—a dessert that’s criminally underrated despite its minimal ingredients.
What are your go-to non-alcoholic contributions for parties? Please don’t say flowers. Not only are they inedible, but they also require attention that most hosts simply don’t have to spare.
