Greetings, and welcome back to Will It Casserole?, the series where we explore which dishes, meals, and cuisines can be reimagined into casseroles (or hot dishes, depending on where you live). It's been a long time—almost two years—since I took a concept suggested by you, the readers, and turned it into a casserole. I've missed having the fun of being creatively guided by your suggestions.
The last casserole I created was a tater tot-topped shepherd’s pie, which turned out great, but I’m itching for something more challenging. I need a truly unique concept—a food lover's fantasy that I can mold into a multi-layered hot dish. Ideas like Garth’s Breakfast Bowl, a cheese plate, or an entire cookout come to mind.
And now, it’s your turn. If you’ve been following Skillet for a while, you might recall the reader-driven nature of this column. Here’s how it works: I throw out a few casserole ideas, and then you chime in with your own thoughts in the comments below, or share suggestions for mine. I'll review the feedback, pick the one that stands out the most, turn it into a casserole, and then share the recipe with you all.
As usual, I’ve got a few ideas to kick things off, most of which have been floating around in my head for a while but never quite came to life:
Grilled cheese & tomato soup casserole: There are several ways to approach this, but I’m imagining loads of crusty bread, a variety of cheeses, and a rich tomato soup reduction.
French onion soup casserole: Similar to the previous idea, but with an overwhelming amount of caramelized onions and a beef broth base instead of the tomato (of course).
Trader Joe’s casserole: What would a casserole look like if made entirely from Trader Joe’s products—extra points if it’s all from the frozen section.
Taco Bell casserole: Since all Taco Bell creations are essentially variations of the same five ingredients, I don’t see why a casserole wouldn’t fit. It could be made with actual Taco Bell items, homemade versions, or a mix of both.
You get the idea. Drop your casserole suggestions in the comments below, and don’t forget to like your favorites. While I can’t promise I’ll choose the one with the most likes, it’s a pretty safe bet.
