Hello and welcome back to What’s on the Menu?, our weekly open forum where you can share your insightful ideas, tips, recipes, and opinions on everything food-related. Today, I want to dive into breakfast—what you eat, how much you eat, and how significant you believe this supposedly essential meal truly is.
I’m not great at breakfast. I can fry eggs, make a mean hollandaise sauce, flip pancakes, and cook bacon to a crispy perfection, but when it comes to actually eating the so-called “most important meal of the day,” I completely fail. However, according to the Wall Street Journal, some people are so skilled at breakfast that they manage to eat it twice in one morning, much like hobbits.
To be fair, hobbits were the only race in Tolkien's universe who were really good at food, so maybe they were onto something. This trend of having two small breakfasts—known to boost energy and improve choices—has become quite popular. According to the Wall Street Journal, many Americans are eating one meal on their way to work and another once they’ve reached their desk. These meals are often centered around quick, convenient foods, like drinkable yogurt, so they can multitask while fueling up for the day.
Enough about hobbits and their breakfast habits. I’d love to hear how you approach your first meal of the day. Here are some questions to help get you started:
How many breakfasts do you typically have?
What do you prefer to eat in the morning? Do you go for something hearty or light?
Where do you enjoy your breakfast? (I used to eat in my car during my commute. I wasn't a fan of that.)
Do you lean toward savory or sweet breakfast options? (For some reason, I need something savory to start my day. Sweet breakfasts make me feel queasy.)
What’s your go-to breakfast for convenience?
Is cold pizza the ultimate breakfast food? (I think it is.)
Have you tried those Pinterest breakfast muffins yet?
Which country, in your opinion, has the best breakfast? (I’m a fan of a simple, mostly-coffee Italian breakfast, though an English fry-up works wonders after a late night.)
What’s your favorite fast-food breakfast option? (For me, Egg McMuffins are flawless.)
Can coffee be considered breakfast? (I think it qualifies if it has milk in it. Milk is filling.)
Have you found a weekday breakfast that fits seamlessly into your routine?
What’s your ideal breakfast to make on weekends when you have the time and a full pot of coffee?
Feel free to share any breakfast tips or advice you think might be useful—or at least interesting. I have a feeling this is going to spark a great conversation.
