'Tis the season for celebrating, and when planning a festive get-together, it’s always helpful to have a theme, focus, or idea. I’m a fan of virtually every kind of party, but my latest favorite is D&D—no, not Dungeons & Dragons, but 'dips and drinks.'
Dips make for the ideal party food. They only need one utensil—a spoon to scoop the dip onto your plate—since the dipper (the item you use to scoop) is itself edible. This makes eating quick and easy, helping the conversation keep flowing. Drinks are a bonus, too.
To throw a dips and drinks gathering, simply get in touch with your friends and tell them to come to your place at a set time, bringing their favorite dip and/or drink. If they bring a dip, remind them to bring the right dippers; if it's a drink, ensure they have enough to share with at least a few people. (A bottle of wine works, but 12 ounces of premium beer might be a bit limiting.)
You don’t need to overthink the menu, but it’s wise to check in with guests about their plans to avoid ending up with 13 onion dips. Although honestly, a party with a keg of beer and 13 onion dips could still be a blast. If you or your guests need some inspiration, we have suggestions here, but aim for a mix of hot and cold, heavy and light, and include a few vegan or vegetarian choices. While cheeseballs aren’t technically dips, I’d allow them—but remember, you’re the master of your D&D gathering.
For drinks, wine and beer are always a safe bet, but a batched cocktail, a punch bowl, or a bottle of amaro (for winding down) add a special, festive touch. A gin & tonic bar with fruits, spices, and various tonics offers an interactive experience, letting you serve cocktails without needing a bartender. Despite the simple menu, there’s plenty of room for creativity with both drinks and dips.
