Rice Krispies Treats are a timeless snack, and it’s easy to understand why: They’re quick to prepare, satisfying to eat, and offer endless customization options. One interesting variation, suggested by Tiktok user @kerlovichkitchen, is using popcorn as the base. Unlike the usual Rice Krispies Treats, where the cereal simply holds the marshmallow mix, popcorn provides a distinct flavor and texture. It balances the sweetness with its buttery, salty crunch, offering a unique twist.
Previously, we’ve recommended using regular potato chips instead of Rice Krispies, a combination that creates a perfect balance of salty, sweet, and crispy deliciousness. This new idea takes it further by introducing the heartiness of popcorn, delivering a snack that will satisfy nearly any craving you have.
How to Prepare Popcorn Rice Krispies Treats
1. Start by popping the corn
Pop a regular microwave popcorn bag, which makes approximately 10-12 cups; let it cool down before using.
2. Prepare the marshmallow sauce
Melt 8 tablespoons of butter and a 16-ounce bag of marshmallows in a large pot over low heat, stirring continuously until smooth. For a smoother texture, you can also incorporate half a cup of sweetened condensed milk.
3. Mix the popcorn with the marshmallow sauce
Once the mixture reaches a smooth consistency, remove it from the heat and mix in the popcorn. Stir well until the popcorn is evenly coated with the marshmallow mixture, then press it into a greased pan.
At this stage, you might be tempted to enjoy it directly from the pan while it's still warm, and that's perfectly fine. Alternatively, you can let it cool and then cut it into squares before indulging.
