How to Set Up Minecraft for Multiplayer with Friends Over LAN
1. LAN Network Configuration
Step 1: On a Windows computer, go to the search or Start menu, type CMD => select Command Prompt.
Step 2: In the Command Prompt window, type ipconfig => press Enter, then copy the IP address listed under IPv4 Address.
- For example, as shown below, the IPv4 Address is 192.168.1.153.
Step 3: Open TLauncher, select the version with TL in front of its name => click Enter The Game.
- Note: If you choose a version without the TL prefix, you won't be able to play with friends.
Step 4: Enter your world, press the ESC key => select Open to LAN.
- Enter any 5-digit number in the Fort Number field => choose Start Lan World.
+ Fort Number: The port number for others to join your game via LAN.
- A notification Local game hosted on port [60689] appears, indicating success. Now, provide your Fort Number and IPv4 Address to your friends.
2. Join your friend's server or LAN game
Step 1: Launch the same version of TLauncher your friends are using (e.g., 1.20.4) => click Enter The Game => select Multiplayer.
Step 2: Inside Play Multiplayer, choose Direct Connect.
Step 3: Enter the "(IPv4 Address):(Fort Number)" provided by your friend into the empty field => press Join Server.
- Example: "192.168.1.153:60689"
3. Common issues when playing with friends
- Error Invalid Session, Check User Name => Ensure you select the correct version with the TL icon at the beginning.
- Error Io.netty.channel.AbstractChannel$AnnotatedConnectException: Connection time out: no further information => Minecraft cannot locate the server details. To resolve this, you should:
+ Disable antivirus software (if installed)
+ Turn off the server's firewall
+ Reconfigure the server settings
- Error 1.14.2: Bad packet ID 26; error 1.13.2: Bad packet ID 27; error 1.7.10: is stuck on Logging in... or received string length longer than maximum allowed => Reset your character's name, ensuring it does not exceed 16 characters.
