Apply the CapCut velocity effect for your TikTok videos
Looking to create a smooth velocity effect for your TikTok edits? Velocity allows you to adjust the speed of your video, whether you want to speed it up or slow it down at specific moments. This can be done through the CapCut mobile or desktop apps, and once your edit is ready, you can upload it directly to TikTok. Here’s how to do it on your iPhone, iPad, Android, or computer.
Creating the Viral Velocity Trend on CapCut
To add velocity to your video in CapCut, simply upload your clip, then tap Edit > Speed > Curve. Move the circle upwards to speed up the footage, or drag it downward to slow it down.
Step-by-Step Guide
Using a Mobile Device
Launch CapCut. If the app isn't installed yet, you can get it from the App Store or Google Play Store.
- CapCut offers basic customization features, but it's sufficient for creating TikTok videos. For more advanced options, you’ll need the desktop version of CapCut.
Insert a video into your timeline. If no project is open, tap New Project to begin. When starting a new project, you'll be prompted to choose a video.
Tap Edit. You’ll find this option at the bottom-left corner.
Tap Speed. A pop-up menu will appear.
- If you'd like to apply an automatic velocity preset, tap Style > Velocity instead. Some presets are free, while others require a purchase. Just add your music and tap the checkmark icon to finish.
Tap Curve, and then select Custom. This opens a graph with interconnected circles along a line.
Modify the speed. The circles, known as "beats", control the video’s speed. Drag a beat upwards to speed up the footage, or downwards to slow it down.
- To remove a beat, tap and hold it, then select Delete.
- To preview your changes, tap the play button below the video.
- Once satisfied, tap the checkmark icon to apply the effect.
Save the video. Tap the download icon at the top of the screen. Your video will be stored on your device. Now you can head to TikTok to share your creation.
- Alternatively, you can tap Share to TikTok to upload it directly. Just make sure you're signed into the app.
Using the Desktop Version
Launch the CapCut application. If you’re not logged in yet, do so at this point.
Add a video to your timeline. If you haven't already opened a project, click New Project to start one. If it's a new project, you'll be prompted to select a video.
- You can also click Import to add a video from your device.
Click Speed. You can find this option in the right panel, below Animate.
- If you can't find it, make sure the video is selected in the timeline.
Select Curve. This tab is located to the right of Normal.
Click Custom. This will allow you to fine-tune the speed of individual segments.
- Make sure the Smooth slow-mo box is checked for smoother transitions.
Modify the speed. Drag the ends of the segments up to increase their speed or down to slow them down. As you do so, you'll see a preview of the changes in the center of the screen.
- To delete a segment, right-click on it and select Delete.
- Click the play button below the video to preview your adjustments.
Export the video. Click Export at the top of the screen. Once done, the video will be saved to your device, ready to be shared on TikTok.
Using the Online Editor
Visit https://www.capcut.com/ in a web browser. You'll need to log into your CapCut account to proceed.
Add a video to your timeline. Click Click to upload in the center of the page to open the file selection window, or simply drag-and-drop a video onto the timeline.
Click Click to upload. This option is located at the center of the page.
Click Speed. You can find it in the right panel, below Animate.
- If you can't see this option, select the video in the timeline first.
Select Curve. It's the tab immediately to the right of Normal.
Click Custom. This option allows you to fine-tune the video speed using the circles ("beats").
- Ensure that the Smooth slow-mo toggle is turned on.
Adjust the speed. Move the beat upward to speed up the video, or pull it downward to slow it down.
- To remove a beat, right-click it and select Delete.
- Click the play button below the video to preview your changes.
Export the video. Click the Export button at the top of the screen. The video will be saved to your device and ready for sharing on TikTok.
