If you're facing a situation where your monitor isn't showing anything despite being connected, the issue often lies with a faulty cable or improper settings. Below are expert solutions, including advice from Computer Specialist Luigi Oppido, on how to resolve the no-signal problem with your computer monitor.
What Causes My Monitor to Show 'No Signal'?
If your monitor displays 'No Signal,' it means it isn't receiving a video signal from your computer. To resolve this, check your video output, cables, and ports. If you're using a dedicated GPU, ensure the monitor is plugged into the GPU and not the motherboard.
Steps to Follow
Inspect the video output connection.
Ensure the monitor is set to the correct input source. Similar to TVs, many monitors offer multiple input sources. Use the physical buttons on the monitor to cycle through the available sources until you find the correct one.
Verify the proper connection.
Ensure the monitor cable is plugged into the correct port. If you have a dedicated GPU, the monitor cable should be plugged into the GPU port, not the motherboard. This port is usually located at the back of the PC tower, below the motherboard ports.
- If the cable is correctly connected, make sure it's securely inserted and not loose.
Examine the physical condition of the ports.
Check for dust and debris in the port. Also, inspect the cable for any signs of damage, as this could interfere with the video signal.
- If there's dust, power off your computer and disconnect everything before you clean it.
Try using a different cable.
Switch to a different cable. Some monitors may require a newer type of cable, while older monitors might need an older version of the cable to function properly.
Start your computer in Safe Mode.
Boot into Safe Mode on your computer. If your monitor isn't displaying correctly but can load Safe Mode, the issue is likely with your screen resolution.
- While in Safe Mode, set the resolution to a lower level, then restart your computer. Once rebooted, open the Display settings and choose the recommended resolution.
Review your projection settings.
If you're connecting a monitor to your laptop, adjust your projection settings. Some devices might not automatically mirror your laptop's screen, so you'll need to set this manually.
- On Windows, press Windows + P to choose between Duplicate, Extend, or Second screen only.
- On Mac, go to the Apple menu > System Settings > Display > display name > Use as.
- On some devices, you may need to unlock the port first. Oppido recommends looking for a key that looks like two boxes with a slash in between them and pressing it. You may have to hold the Function key to activate it.
