Get Alexa to respond to voice commands once again
If your Alexa device isn't reacting to your voice, check the cables, Wi-Fi connection, and settings. Thankfully, there are several methods to restore Alexa's responsiveness. Here’s what to do when Alexa stops responding to your voice commands.
Why Won't Alexa Respond to My Voice?
Alexa might not react to your voice if there’s an issue with your Wi-Fi connection, a change in your Wake Word, or a hardware problem. A quick fix is to unplug the device for 20 minutes before plugging it back in.
Steps to Resolve the Issue
Let the device stay unplugged for a while.

Unplug the device for around 20 minutes, then reconnect it. This gives Alexa a full reboot. Once it powers up again, test the voice commands once more.
Inspect the power adapter.

Ensure you're using the proper cables. If you no longer have the original power adapter, make sure to use a replacement that's Amazon-certified. Using faulty adapters could lead to hardware problems.
Alter the Wake Word.

Try a different Wake Word. This is the command that activates Alexa. It's possible that someone changed it by accident.
- You can easily change the Wake Word using the mobile app.
Check your internet connection.

Ensure Alexa is connected to Wi-Fi. Although Alexa can function as a Bluetooth speaker without Wi-Fi, its capabilities will be severely limited. If it’s unresponsive, it could be due to a lack of resources for an answer.
- Consider troubleshooting your internet connection.
Confirm Alexa is not muted.

Check if the device is muted. When Alexa is muted, the light will show red. Some Echo models may also have a physical mute button, typically represented by a speaker icon.
Rephrase your question.

Try rewording your question. Sometimes questions can be too vague or complex for Alexa to interpret accurately.
Test the Action button.

Press the Action button. On Alexa devices that lack a screen, this is a physical button on the device itself. Pressing it should prompt Alexa to respond.
- Be sure to also test the volume buttons, as the volume may have been unintentionally lowered.
Move the device.

Place your Alexa device away from any obstructions. Choose a location for your Alexa that is free from excessive background noise or interference from other devices.
