“Bismillah” translates to “In the name of Allah” in Arabic. Also known as Basmalah, “Bismillah” is the invocation that begins every surah (chapter) of the Qur'an, except one. It is a shortened form of “Bismillahi ar-Rahmani ar-Raheem,” which means “In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.” Muslims say this phrase before reciting verses from the Qur'an.
