Wearing a welding mask is essential for completing safety measures. In addition to extreme heat, thermite emits ultraviolet rays that can damage your eyes if not handled properly. A welding mask provides the best protection as it is designed for use when melting metals, such as thermite.
Wear protective clothing, including gloves and a fire-resistant apron. Use thick, insulated gloves and protect your body with a fire-resistant apron. For added safety, wear long sleeves and pants to cover exposed skin. Also, wear closed-toe shoes.
Create thermite
Purchase fine iron oxide powder (rust), aluminum powder, and a thin strip of magnesium. Iron oxide and aluminum will react to form thermite, while magnesium will act as the ignition material. For a basic thermite experiment, you will need 3g of aluminum powder and 9g of iron oxide.
Mix aluminum powder with iron oxide on a sheet of paper. Combine 3g of aluminum powder with 9g of iron oxide. You can stir the two metals together or shake them between two sheets of paper. Continue mixing until the two substances are thoroughly combined.
Pour the metal mixture into a ceramic container. You can use a clay dish or flower pot. Ceramic materials will not melt under the heat of thermite. It’s best to place the ceramic dish containing the metal mixture into another ceramic dish as a precaution in case one breaks due to heat.
Insert the magnesium strip. You will use the magnesium strip to ignite the mixture. Ensure the strip is long enough to give you sufficient time to step back.
Ignite the magnesium strip from a safe distance. It’s best to use a long lighter or a firestarter stick, such as those used for fireworks. Step back to observe the thermite reaction from a safe distance.
Advice
- Do not place thermite on ice or anything below room temperature; it may cause an explosion.
- This experiment should only be conducted on your own property and under supervision.
- Avoid igniting thermite in public areas, streets, sidewalks, or major roads. Burning a hole in such surfaces can lead to trouble for you and others.
- Magnesium strips can be difficult to ignite; consider using a propane torch.
- Consider placing a mold beneath the thermite to catch molten iron.
Warnings
- Do not pour additional thermite onto an active thermite reaction or its byproducts.
- Only use sturdy containers, and avoid handling them while they are burning.
- Using thermite is illegal in some regions.
- This is a hazardous activity. Thermite burns at extremely high temperatures and can cause severe burns.
- In case of an emergency, call for help immediately.
- Do not use cast iron containers for the reaction. Thermite can burn through most metals, so ceramic is necessary.
- Keep a fire extinguisher nearby in case the fire spreads. Note that metal fires cannot be extinguished with standard fire extinguishers!
- Have a first aid kit readily available.
