We answer your questions about the now-retired Hang Status feature.
Occasionally, Discord tests out new experimental features within the app. One such feature was Hang Status. Known as Voice Activity on mobile, Hang Status allowed you to set a status while in a voice channel, as long as your server supported the feature. As of August 2024, Discord has disabled the Hang Status, though it may return later. In this article, we'll explore Hang Status in detail and explain its functionality.
Overview of Discord Hang StatusHang Statuses were a test feature on Discord that let you display your status while in a voice channel, but the feature was discontinued in August 2024. Like many experimental features, it was only available on select servers during its run. There's no official word yet on if or when Hang Statuses will return to Discord.
How to UseWhat is a Hang Status on Discord?

Hang Statuses were a unique status available when you were in a voice channel. The Hang Status feature was experimental and not accessible to all Discord users. If your server supported it, you could set a specific status in the voice channel to show what you were up to.
- If your server had the Hang Status feature, you'd notice an icon beside your name in the voice channel. If you didn't see an icon, it meant the server didn't have access to the feature.

As of August 2024, the Hang Status feature has been disabled by Discord. It's still unclear if or when Discord will reintroduce this feature in the future.
How Hang Statuses Functioned

Hang Statuses were only available in voice channels. They differed from regular Discord status messages, but like those messages, your Hang Status would appear below your name in the server member lists and on your profile.
- If you left a voice channel, your Hang Status would disappear, and your regular Discord status (if you had one) would reappear.

If you didn't want a Hang Status, you could remove it manually. However, this had to be done every time you entered a voice channel. There was no option to turn off Hang Statuses in your user settings or in a server's settings.

Hang Statuses were available on both desktop and mobile. On mobile, they were referred to as 'Voice Activity', but functioned the same way.
-
Desktop: Enter a voice channel, click the icon next to your name, and choose from predefined Hang Statuses, create your own, or remove the Hang Status.
-
Mobile: Enter a voice channel, swipe upwards, tap Set Voice Activity, and then choose a predefined Hang Status, create your own, or clear the Hang Status.

Your custom Hang Statuses were temporary. There was no option to permanently save them for reuse. After a few days, your custom Hang Statuses would be erased, and you'd have to re-enter them if you wanted to use them again.

There are conflicting reports about who could view your Hang Status. Some claim that everyone in the voice channel could see your Hang Status, while others say it was visible to everyone on your friends list, even if they weren't in the same server where you were voice chatting.
