Accepting yourself, your life, and the reality you live in can be difficult. You might not like the outlook of your future, feel uncomfortable with a part of your personality, or sometimes dislike your appearance. Self-criticism is a common struggle, but there are many ways to learn how to accept yourself and your life.
Steps
Foster the Will to Accept

Acknowledge Your Strengths. It's easy to look in the mirror and point out your flaws. However, instead of focusing on what you lack, take the time to list what makes you who you are. Write down your strengths, values, and the people you have around you.
- If you're struggling to identify your strengths, ask your friends or family what they believe are your positive qualities.

Be Honest with Yourself. This can be one of the most challenging steps, but it is a necessary one for transforming your life. In today's society, which focuses on individualism, we are encouraged to strive for success, and often view praise as a sign of accomplishment. Criticism is seen as negative, so we tend to avoid confronting it.
- To be truly honest with yourself, try to see yourself through the eyes of a stranger. Ask yourself what a stranger might think of you, and be objective, rather than just relying on your own self-assessment.

Acknowledge Your Mistakes. Remember, you cannot fix what you don't admit. You can view mistakes as opportunities for growth, as a way to get closer to what you truly want in life. Have confidence in yourself, trust that only you can change your life and control your destiny. Identify what matters most to you and focus your energy on it. Break through doubts and trust that you can turn your dreams into reality.
- When you see mistakes as learning opportunities and recognize that reality is constantly changing, you'll become more determined to face challenges, persevere, and grow meaningfully.

Talk to Someone You Trust. Share your feelings about life with a friend or family member who genuinely cares about you and is there for you when needed. By sharing your thoughts with others, you'll realize that your worries may be overblown, or that your life isn’t as bad as you thought.
- If you don't just want to vent, consider asking friends or family for advice on how to change or improve your life in ways you may have been reluctant to accept.

Seek Professional Guidance. Sometimes, getting help from a professional can be easier and more effective. A therapist can help you accept yourself and your reality. This could be a psychologist, psychiatrist, counselor, or mental health expert.
- You can seek out a psychologist at your nearest hospital.
Practice the Ability to Focus Your Willpower

Understand the benefits of focusing willpower. Focusing willpower on reality and emotions has been shown to be highly effective in helping us accept ourselves more. Some methods to practice strengthening willpower include learning to love yourself with the help of a professional, but you can also practice on your own at home. Some benefits of focusing on self-love include:
- Learning to criticize yourself less.
- Learning to deal with vague emotions.
- Learning to encourage yourself with positivity rather than self-criticism.

Schedule time and set a timer. Spend 10-20 minutes in peace to meditate either in the morning or at night. When you set a timer, you can focus without worrying about being late for work or other commitments.
- You should choose a gentle, quiet timer sound to signal the end of your meditation session.

Sit up straight in a chair. Find a comfortable chair and settle in. Keep your posture straight and close your eyes to minimize external distractions.
- Additionally, choose a quiet spot in your home to avoid interruptions.

Focus on your breath. Pay attention to how you breathe naturally without altering it unless you want to feel more relaxed. Feel your breath entering through your nose or mouth, traveling down into your lungs, and energizing your whole body.
- Feel the inhalation and exhalation as they release both physical and mental tension.
- Try to maintain this focus, but feel free to let your body relax for a few minutes if needed.

Count your breath. Count each inhalation and exhalation up to four, then start again. Your mind will solely focus on your breath and body.
- If your mind starts to wander, simply acknowledge it without judgment and gently bring your focus back to your breath.

Be determined. Practice willpower meditation daily, and gradually you'll notice yourself becoming more aware and accepting of both yourself and the world around you as you stop worrying about judging everything.
- It will take time and practice to achieve this, so don't give up too soon! Remember, patience is key.
Advice
- There are many factors beyond your control. However, don’t try to control everything. Instead, transform your thoughts into action and give your best effort.
- Don’t blame others for the choices you make.
- Find an image of yourself as a child. Think about how far you’ve come since then. Reflect on your growth and the goals you’ve achieved. You are amazing, so don’t think of yourself as insignificant—every person has a purpose in life.
- When you feel down, engage in activities that help lift your spirits. It could be drawing, exercising/yoga, listening to music, or anything else that helps you relax.
Warning
- If you feel overwhelmed by life, consider seeking help from a psychologist.
