OpenAire is an initiative by the European Commission that nurtures social and technical connections to propel OPEN SCIENCE across Europe and beyond. Through these connections, users can explore millions of publications, tens of thousands of datasets, thousands of repositories, and countless open access journals, most of which are open licensed. These resources result from topics and research projects funded under the Horizon 2020 program, promoting the European Commission's vision of OPEN SCIENCE. This article explores how to search for and utilize open licensed resources on the OpenAire platform.
Steps
Introduction to the OpenAire search page
Go to the OpenAire homepage. Visit the OpenAire homepage at https://www.openaire.eu/. The image shown is a screenshot of the OpenAire homepage captured on 30/04/2017.
Search options on the OpenAire platform. With OpenAire, you have several options for searching:
- General Information Search. On the OpenAire homepage, hover over the SEARCH menu on the navigation bar, then select General Information.
- Data Provider Search. On the OpenAire homepage, hover over the SEARCH menu on the navigation bar, then select Data Provider.
- Publications Search. On the OpenAire homepage, hover over the SEARCH menu on the navigation bar, then select Publications, data, projects….

- Newest First - Shows the most recent results first.
- Oldest First - Displays the oldest results first.
- Most Popular - Shows the most popular results at the top.
- Alphabetical - Sorts results alphabetically.
- Category - Sorts results by category.
- Knowledge Base - Knowledge repository.
- Search Events - Search for events.
- Newsletters - Newsletters.
- Documents - Documents.
- Categories - Categories.
- Contacts - Contacts.
- Articles - Articles.
- News Feeds - News feeds.

- Publication Repositories - Publication repositories. With this option, you can further filter by:
- Institutional - Filter by research institutions.
- Thematic - Filter by themes.
- Other – Other types.
- Publication Repositories Aggregators - Publication repository aggregators.
- Data Repositories - Data repositories.
- Data Repositories Aggregators - Data repository aggregators.
- Journals - Journals.
- Journals Aggregators - Journal aggregators.
- CRIS Systems - Current Research Information Systems (CRIS).
- Publication Catalogues - Publication catalogues.
- OpenAIRE Basic (DRIVER OA) - The basic level of OpenAIRE.
- OpenAIRE 2.0 (EC funding) - OpenAIRE 2.0 with European Commission funding.
- OpenAIRE 2.0+ (DRIVER OA, EC funding) - OpenAIRE 2.0+ with DRIVER OA and EC funding.
- OpenAIRE 3.0 (OA, funding) - OpenAIRE 3.0 with Open Access (OA) and funding.
- OpenAIRE Data (funded, referenced datasets) - OpenAIRE data with funded and referenced datasets.
