Today, Mytour will guide you on how to access folders shared by another computer over the Internet network. This process works on both Windows and Mac computers.
Steps
On Windows
Ensure that your computer is connected to the correct network. To open a folder shared by another computer, both computers need to be on the same Internet network.
- If your current PC is already connected to the computer sharing the folder via an Ethernet cable, skip this step.
Click on Network and Sharing Center (Network Sharing Center). This link is located at the bottom of the page.
- You may need to scroll down to see this link. If it's still not visible after scrolling, click on the Status tab in the top-left corner of the window and search for it again.
Click on Change advanced sharing settings (Change Advanced Sharing Settings). This option is located in the top-left corner of the window. A new window will open.
Enable network discovery and file sharing. Check both options, "Turn on network discovery" and "Turn on file and printer sharing".
Click on Save changes (Save Changes) at the bottom of the window. Your settings will be saved.
File Explorer- You can also press ⊞ Win+E to open File Explorer.
Click on Network on the left sidebar near the bottom of the File Explorer window.
- You may need to scroll down within the left sidebar of File Explorer to locate this option.
Select the computer. Double-click the name of the computer that is sharing the folder you wish to open.
Select the folder. Double-click on the folder you want to open.
Enter the username and password if prompted. These are typically the credentials used to log into the computer that is sharing the folder. Once the correct information is provided, the folder will open.
- If the folder is not protected, the content will open immediately after you double-click it.

Locate the 'Shared' section. The 'Shared' title appears on the left side of the Finder window. The name of the computer sharing the folder you wish to access will be displayed here.
Select the computer. Under the 'Shared' title, click on the name of the computer sharing the folder you want to open. A list of the computer's folders will appear in the center of the Finder window.
Choose the folder. Double-click on the folder you wish to open.
Enter your username and password if prompted. This is typically the username and password used to log into the computer sharing the folder. If the information is correct, the folder will open.
- If the folder is not protected, the contents will open immediately when you double-click it.
