YouTube is a video-sharing platform that allows you to upload and view videos in various formats, from standard to HD quality. Some schools and institutions restrict access to YouTube and other websites in educational environments. Fortunately, there are several ways to bypass these restrictions, such as using Google Translate or accessing the internet through your mobile phone's data connection.
Steps
Use Google Translate

Open the browser tab with Google Translate. Go to translate.google.com in your web browser.
- When you load Google Translate, you are essentially tricking the browser into thinking you are reading content on Google instead of the website you actually want to view. This can help bypass most blockages, including on YouTube.
- Some of the more common filters may block Google Translate. If that happens, refer to the alternative methods below.

Change the language at the top left of the frame. You can switch to any language except "Detected Language".

Change the language at the top right of the frame. Set it to your preferred language to read the page.
- You will get an error message if you try to translate the website into its original language. So, make sure to switch it to another language.

Copy the video URL. Open the video you want to watch in a new tab or browser window, and copy the URL from the address bar.

Paste the URL into the left box on Google Translate's page. Remove the word edufilter from the URL if it’s there.

Click on the link that appears in the right box. The Google Translate bar will appear at the top of the page. This is how we trick website-blocking tools. Make sure the bar is still open when you’re watching the video.
Use a proxy website

Open a search engine on your home computer. Most likely, many of the websites listing available proxies will also be blocked at school. Creating the list at home will give you access to more proxy sites.

Search for "proxy list" on an online search engine. Proxies are websites that locate blocked content and display it through a proxy site, meaning the filtering software will never actually recognize you're accessing the blocked site (YouTube) but will only detect the proxy site.

Find a website that lists multiple available proxies. The search results will give you a list of sites that provide working proxy options.

Make a list of about a dozen proxy sites to try. Your school's network administrators will actively block new proxy sites as they appear, so many of the sites you find might already be inactive.
- Make sure to gather proxies from different proxy lists.

Rewrite or email the list to yourself. This way, you can easily access the list from the school’s computer.

Visit the first site on your list. If it's blocked, move on to the next one until you find one that works.

Enter .youtube.com in the URL field. Click the button to load the page.

Wait for YouTube to load. Using a proxy will slow down the page loading time as the traffic passes through the proxy server. This means the video will take longer to start than usual. Also, ensure that your proxy isn’t blocking scripts to load YouTube successfully.
Use your phone as a mobile hotspot

Identify which phone can do this. You need a smartphone that allows you to share your mobile network connection with your computer. Many 3G data plans allow you to automatically share the connection with your computer.
- Using your phone as a hotspot will help you bypass any network restrictions at school.

Open the Settings app on your iPhone or Android phone.

Go to the Portable Hotspot/Tethering section.
- For Android – Tap "More" under "Wireless & Networks". Then, select "Tethering & portable hotspot".
- For iOS – Select "Personal Hotspot".

Enable the hotspot on your phone.
- For Android – Check the "Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot" box.
- For iOS – Turn on the "Personal Hotspot" feature.

Get the Wi-Fi password.
- For Android – Tap "Set up Wi-Fi hotspot". Then, check the "Show password" box.
- For iOS – Tap "Wi-Fi Password".

Connect to the hotspot on your computer. Click on the wireless network icon on your computer and select your mobile phone from the list of available networks. Enter the password to connect.

Connect your phone to the computer via USB if there is no wireless option. Once the phone is connected, you can select it by clicking on the network icon in the system tray (Windows) or the menu bar (OS X).
Download video

Search for the video. Since YouTube.com is blocked, search for the video through a search engine like Google. In the top search results, you will find a link to the video’s page on YouTube.

Copy the URL. Copy the entire URL of the video. It will look like this: "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxxxxxxx", where X represents random letters and numbers.

Find a video downloading service. There are many websites that allow you to download YouTube videos. Search using the keyword "YouTube downloader".
- Copy the video URL into the URL bar of the download page. Hit the download button.
- When visiting a video download site for the first time, you may be prompted to run JavaScript. Don't do this unless you trust the site. Check online reviews to see if others find the site safe.
- Your network may block JavaScript from running. If that happens, you may not be able to download videos at school.

Download the video. A list of download options will appear. These represent different file types and video quality choices. FLV and MP4 are the most compatible file formats.
- You may need to install a specific video player to open the downloaded file. A program like VLC Player can play almost any downloaded file.
- The number following "P" in the download list indicates video quality. For the best image quality, choose video from 480P or higher.
- If you just want the audio from a video, download the MP3 version. Although it lacks the visual aspect, this file can be played on your computer or any MP3 player.
Use the Command Prompt application (Windows)

Press the Windows + R keys and type CMD into the run box that opens.

Type ipconfig in the CMD black screen and press Enter.

Search for your video using an online search engine. Look for videos on websites other than YouTube. These sites may not be blocked. Be cautious when visiting unknown websites as they may contain harmful viruses.
- Alternative search engines that can help protect your privacy include duckduckgo.com and startpage.com.
Warning
- Many administrators consider using proxies as an improper use of school computers, so there's a high likelihood you'll face punishment if caught.
