Principles to Prevent Acne

Avoid popping pimples. This is the golden rule! Pimples contain harmful bacteria. If you squeeze them, these bacteria can spread to nearby pores and settle there. Don’t give them that opportunity.

Another downside of popping pimples is that the surrounding skin, as well as the pimple itself, can become inflamed. This inflammation will make your skin redder and more painful.

Avoid touching your face. Your hands (no matter how often you wash them) always carry oil and dirt. They also act as a medium for transferring bacteria. If you constantly rub dirt, oil, and bacteria onto your face, it will lead to consequences, and you’ll spread bacteria to other areas of your skin.

Stay hydrated. Many doctors recommend drinking 9 to 12 cups of water a day (equivalent to 2.2 to 3 liters), depending on your gender. (Women should aim for 9 cups, and men should aim for 12 cups). Your skin is an organ, just like your kidneys, and it needs adequate hydration to function properly.

Eliminate sugary drinks like soda, fruit juice, and smoothies from your daily diet. While this has been debated for decades, recent studies suggest that diet significantly impacts acne, with sugar being a major culprit. Sugar causes a spike in insulin levels, leading to the overproduction of certain hormones that trigger breakouts.

Reduce dairy intake. Dairy is now considered a potential acne trigger. It promotes the production of male hormones—testosterone and androgens. Combined with insulin, these hormones can lead to unsightly blemishes on your face.

Unsweetened green tea is a beneficial beverage. Green tea is rich in antioxidants that help the body combat free radicals. Free radicals damage cells and are believed to contribute to skin aging. Alongside water, green tea is an excellent drink for overall health.

Maintain a healthy diet. Your diet can contribute to beautiful skin if you eat wisely. You’ve likely heard this principle before: consume plenty of leafy greens and fruits, incorporate healthy fats, and include probiotic-rich foods in your meals.

Individuals who eat more fruits, vegetables, and consume less sugar and dairy tend to experience fewer breakouts. Aim to eat between 400 to 900 grams of vegetables and fruits daily, especially leafy greens.

Incorporate omega-3-rich foods into your diet. There are various types of fats, including beneficial ones. Healthy fats like omega-3 help reduce inflammation and promote cell health. Omega-3 is sensitive to heat, so it’s best to consume foods rich in omega-3 raw. If cooking is necessary, baking or grilling is preferable to boiling or frying. Foods high in omega-3 include:
- Fish, particularly salmon, sardines, and herring.
- Nuts and seeds, especially flaxseeds.
- Leafy greens, such as spinach and watercress.

Find creative ways to relieve stress. Many people escape stressful situations by taking a walk. Others channel their stress into activities like painting. Whatever helps you unwind, make it a regular practice and do it as often as possible.

Try meditation techniques. There are numerous ways to meditate. Find the method that works best for you. Many people choose yoga to calm their minds.

Get enough sleep. Lack of sleep can lead to stress and breakouts. As mentioned earlier, stress negatively impacts your skin and can cause acne. Additionally, change your pillowcase regularly. You can wrap your pillow in a towel to absorb oil and flip it the next night.

Younger individuals and older adults need more sleep than adults. Teenagers, in particular, require 10 to 11 hours of sleep each night.

Stay active. Barring bone or muscle injuries, exercise is considered a cure-all. Physical activity improves blood circulation, which helps keep your skin healthy and radiant. Here are a few things to keep in mind when exercising:

Always apply sunscreen when exercising outdoors. Without proper protection, you risk sunburn before reaping the benefits of improved blood circulation. Choose a sunscreen that doesn’t irritate your skin.

Shower thoroughly after exercising. Sweating can clog your pores with dirt and impurities. Make sure to cleanse your body, especially your face, after a workout.
Acne Treatment Methods

Use products containing benzoyl peroxide. Benzoyl peroxide is effective in killing acne-causing bacteria. Concentrations vary across products, but a 2.5% benzoyl peroxide solution is just as effective as 5-10% concentrations and is gentler on the skin. It also helps exfoliate dead skin, leaving your complexion brighter and renewed.

Incorporate salicylic acid products into your routine. Like benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid targets acne-causing bacteria. It also accelerates the shedding of dead skin cells and promotes the growth of new skin. Apply a small amount to affected areas before bed after thoroughly cleansing your face.

Use toothpaste. Toothpaste contains silica, a drying agent often found in foods that need to stay dry, like beef jerky or candy. Generally, toothpaste can dry out pimples and reduce their size.

Opt for natural toothpaste to treat facial acne. Some toothpastes contain sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), which can irritate the skin. Always check the ingredients before applying toothpaste to your face.

Apply tea tree oil. Tea tree oil is an antibacterial essential oil that can eliminate bacteria trapped in your pores. For oil in small bottles, use a cotton swab to dab a small amount onto the pimple. Avoid using too much.

Tea tree oil has anti-inflammatory properties, which can reduce the size and redness of pimples.

Crush an aspirin tablet. Grind one aspirin tablet and mix it with enough water to form a paste. Use a cotton swab to gently apply the mixture to the pimple, cover it, and let it dry. Aspirin is also an anti-inflammatory, meaning it combats skin inflammation and helps fade pimples. Leave the aspirin on your skin overnight.

Use an astringent designed for oily skin. Astringents contain agents that tighten the skin. Some medicated astringents include antibacterial ingredients to combat acne and reduce its size. Consider the following options:

Purchase over-the-counter products. These products come in various types and sizes. Look for ones containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. Opt for a gentle formula suitable for your skin type.

Green tea. Green tea is an astringent rich in antioxidants. It helps combat signs of aging by fighting free radicals. Steep a green tea bag in hot water, remove the bag, and quickly press it onto acne-prone areas.

Use ice if needed. Rubbing an ice cube on a pimple can numb the area. Stop once the skin feels numb and wait for it to warm up again.

As mentioned earlier, ice tightens pores by causing blood vessels beneath the skin to constrict. If your pimple is painful, ice can help reduce the discomfort.

If your face has multiple breakouts, treat one area at a time. Once one area is numb, move on to the next.

Repeat this process across your entire face.

Use eye drops on acne-prone areas. Eye drops, including those designed to reduce redness, can also help diminish the redness of pimples. Apply a few drops to a cotton swab and dab it onto the affected areas.

Cold temperatures can reduce swelling, so you can refrigerate the cotton swab soaked in eye drops for about an hour before applying it to your face. The chilled swab will soothe swollen pimples.

Use natural antihistamines. Antihistamines help control skin inflammation. They are often available in pill form, but some also come as teas or topical treatments. These can reduce redness. Herbs containing antihistamines include:

Nettle. It may sound unusual, as touching nettle can cause itching. However, doctors suggest that using freeze-dried nettle preparations can reduce the amount of histamine your body produces.

Horse chestnut is also an effective natural antihistamine. Europeans have used this plant for centuries to treat skin conditions. The leaves can be ground into a paste, or the herb’s extract can be formulated into oral medication.

Thyme is another natural antihistamine. Steam a few sprigs of thyme and gently apply them to acne-prone areas. Thyme signals your body that it doesn’t need to fight the foreign agents causing the breakouts.

If acne persists despite these methods, consult a dermatologist. There are effective antibiotics and oral medications that can quickly heal acne-prone skin.
Tips
- Even after your acne clears, continue these steps for at least 30 days or longer. Acne can return even after adolescence. If it does, reapply the methods above.
- Exfoliate every four days to remove dead skin cells.
- Everyone experiences breakouts at some point, and different methods work for different people. If one method doesn’t work for you, don’t worry. Try another and stay positive!
- To thoroughly remove dirt and oil, let soap or cleanser sit on your skin for two minutes to take effect. You don’t need to scrub continuously, but this approach works well.
- To avoid feeling idle during this time, play music or multitask (e.g., brush your teeth or relax as if at a spa).
- Rinse your face thoroughly. The most effective way to end your acne routine is to fill the sink with warm water, dip your face in, and gently rub to rinse off the cleanser. Submerge your entire face in the water.
- If you use a lot of cleanser, you may need to rinse again. Follow up with cold water to tighten pores. Many prefer using toner at this stage.
- If you don’t rinse off the cleanser properly, it can lead to further dirt and oil buildup.
- In the first two weeks, you might experience more breakouts as pores open and release impurities. Stay brave and optimistic. Eventually, you’ll overcome them, and your skin will improve.
- When applying ice to acne, you can rub it all over your face to prevent future breakouts.
- Avoid overusing skincare products, as they can irritate your skin and worsen acne. Remember, skincare products often seem effective initially but may contain additives that prevent acne from fully disappearing, encouraging continued use.
