The white part of the eye, known as the sclera, reflects the overall health of the body. A yellowish or reddish sclera can negatively impact your appearance, making you look older and more fatigued. This may also indicate health issues related to allergens, toxins in the body, or even more serious liver problems. There are various treatments available to help reduce the redness or yellowing in the sclera, ranging from eye drops to dietary changes and even makeup solutions.
Steps
Use eye drops

Use common eye drops such as Visine or Clear Eyes. These eye drops help reduce redness and provide moisture to counteract irritants or dryness. Visine, Clear Eyes, and other brands are available at health stores, pharmacies, and even large supermarkets like Walmart. Place 1-2 drops in the affected eye. Be sure to read the instructions on the bottle for further details.
- Avoid using eye drops like Visine or Clear Eyes too frequently. While they provide instant relief, frequent use may prevent the eyes from producing natural lubrication, leading to chronic dryness and redness, potentially creating a dependency on the drops. A safer alternative is saline solution or gentle eye drops like Systane, which mimic natural tears.

Try using eye drops with a higher viscosity. The Japanese eye drop brand Rohto offers a thicker formula compared to natural tears. Rohto has a cooling effect, helping to alleviate the burning sensation in the eyes and reduce redness. This product is available at pharmacies and health stores. If you have never used any eye drops before, this might not be the best option as it could be too intense for your eyes.

Try using blue-colored eye drops. Swiss company Innoxa has created a blue-colored eye drop solution. Besides soothing the burning and redness in the eyes, Innoxa Blue Drops also protect the eyes with a thin blue layer, which reflects the yellowish color in the eyes to make them appear clearer.
Change your health care habits

Eat a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables. Orange and yellow vegetables like carrots, pumpkins, lemons, and oranges are rich in vitamins and antioxidants that help maintain healthy, bright eyes. Dark leafy greens like spinach and kale also contribute positively to eye health. Nuts like almonds, walnuts, and peanuts contain minerals that support eye health.
- These fruits and vegetables also help detoxify the liver. A healthy liver will keep the sclera of the eyes looking clear. If the liver is overloaded with toxins, it won't process food and vitamins as effectively as it should. Detoxify the liver by drinking a glass of beetroot juice on an empty stomach or eating carrots and spinach.

Reduce your intake of refined sugar and processed carbohydrates. Cutting back on foods that contain refined sugar and processed carbohydrates, as well as wheat, will help your body digest food better and detoxify the liver. Reducing the consumption of unhealthy foods, especially in the evening, is crucial as they can interfere with good sleep.

Take dietary supplements. Healthy eyes need a sufficient intake of Vitamin A and Vitamin C. In addition to eating foods rich in these vitamins, you should consider taking daily vitamin supplements. Additionally, increase your intake of omega-3 fatty acids by consuming 4 fish oil capsules or omega-3 supplements every day.

Sleep 7-8 hours every night. Getting enough rest ensures your body and eyes recover, helping to restore their natural white appearance. You should aim for at least 7-8 hours of sleep each night. If you have trouble sleeping, try listening to calming music or meditating for 10 minutes before bedtime to signal your body that it’s time to sleep.

Drink plenty of water. The clarity of the whites of your eyes depends on staying hydrated. Drinking enough water helps replenish fluids, reducing swelling and eye redness. You should aim to drink 8-10 glasses of water each day, roughly equivalent to 1800 ml.

Cut down on alcohol and caffeine. Both of these substances dehydrate the body, which can lead to red, swollen eyes. They also affect your sleep quality, making it harder to get a full 7-8 hours of rest.

Avoid irritants such as smoke, dust, and pollen. Cigarette smoke can irritate the eyes and cause dryness and redness. Quitting smoking will help restore the natural color of your eyes and hydrate them. Both outdoor and indoor dust can irritate your eyes, making them prone to redness. Pollen and other allergens can also contribute to eye irritation. If you can’t avoid these, consider using an air purifier in your home to reduce exposure to these irritants.

Reduce eye strain. Spending long hours working on a computer can strain your eyes. However, you may not always be able to reduce screen time. If you need to work on a computer for many hours each day, it's important to find ways to relieve eye stress. For example, install appropriate lighting, adjust the screen brightness to match the room's lighting, blink frequently, and do eye exercises, among other tips.

Wear sunglasses outdoors. UVA and UVB rays can cause long-term damage to your eyes, and exposure to sunlight can contribute to yellowing of the eyes. Sunglasses help protect your eyes from these harmful rays. Most sunglasses today provide this protection, but it's always best to check. Make it a habit to wear sunglasses when outdoors in bright sunlight. You don’t need sunny days to wear them—cloudy days still have enough UV rays to stress and damage your eyes.

Visit a doctor. A condition known as jaundice can cause your eyes to appear yellow. Jaundice occurs when hemoglobin in the blood is broken down into bilirubin, which is not properly eliminated from the body. Bilirubin buildup in the skin and eyes leads to a yellowish tint. Jaundice may indicate underlying health issues related to the liver, gallbladder, or pancreas. You should consult with a doctor for screening of jaundice and any other potential health conditions that could cause yellowing of the eyes.
Use natural ingredients.

Try Ayurvedic therapy (Traditional Indian Medicine). Ayurveda, originating in India around 3000 years ago, uses natural remedies to prevent and treat health issues. Triphala is an herbal mixture commonly used in Ayurveda to address various problems, including improving eye health and promoting bright, clear eyes by detoxifying the body. You can find Triphala in powder or tablet form at stores specializing in Indian products.
- To use Triphala as an eye wash, dissolve 1 tablespoon of Triphala powder in 240 ml of water and let it sit overnight. Strain the mixture to collect the liquid, then apply it to the eyes or use it to rinse your eyes.
- Be cautious: Triphala is also used as a laxative to treat constipation, so use it with care.
- One of the key ingredients in Triphala is the Indian gooseberry. The juice of this fruit can be directly applied to the eyes in the evening to help improve the whiteness of the sclera.

Apply carrot juice to your eyelids. Not only does eating carrots benefit your health, but applying carrot juice to your eyelids can also improve your eye health. Wash and dry several carrots, trim both ends, and use a juicer to extract the juice. Gently apply the juice to your eyelids and leave it overnight. Be careful not to get the juice directly into your eyes.

Use a cold compress on your eyes. Applying a cold compress to the eye area helps reduce swelling and improves the whiteness of the sclera. Soak a clean towel in ice water, wring out the excess water, and apply it to your eyes for 5-10 minutes. Repeat several times throughout the day to reduce redness.
Makeup

Brighten the under-eye area. Dark circles under your eyes can make them appear dull. You can use concealer to brighten the skin under and around your eyes. Apply small dots of concealer along the under-eye area, then gently tap to blend it evenly across the entire area.

Use navy or indigo eyeshadow and eyeliner. Creating a navy or indigo hue around the eyes provides a softer look compared to sharp black. Additionally, these shades of blue reflect the whites of the eyes, making them appear brighter and clearer.

Apply eyeliner. Today, white eyeliner products are widely available in supermarkets and beauty stores. Drawing one or two lines of white eyeliner on your eyelids will make your eyes appear brighter and larger. Additionally, you can blend some white eyeliner near the inner corners of your eyes to create a fresh, radiant, and youthful look.

Use brown mascara on your lower lashes. Creating a contrast will make your eyes look brighter. Applying black mascara to both your upper and lower lashes can make your eyes sharp but not bright. Instead, apply brown mascara to your lower lashes. The lighter brown shade will draw attention to the upper lashes, making your eyes appear larger, sharper, and brighter.

Try using a light-colored eyeliner. Using a light-colored or nude eyeliner will reflect light, making your eyes appear larger. You can apply eyeliner along the inner rim of your eyes to create the illusion of brighter eyes.
- Applying white or light-colored eyeshadow at the inner corners of your eyes can also have a similar effect.
- Avoid using white eyeliner for lining your eyes, as it can be hard to blend properly and may make your eyes appear too artificial or "fake."

Use an eyelash curler. An eyelash curler, which is affordable, will help curl your lashes upward. Curling your lashes will make your eyes look larger and more defined. This method also draws attention to your eyes by making your lashes appear longer.

Use a little blush. Apply blush to your cheeks, lips, and along the highest point of your brows. This will brighten the appearance of your face and make your eyes look brighter and whiter.
Warning
- Swollen, red, or irritated eyes may indicate an eye condition, such as a stye, conjunctivitis (pink eye), or an eye injury. If you suspect any of these conditions or other eye issues, it's advisable to see a doctor.
