To achieve something in life, you need to identify your most important goals, create an actionable plan, and even consider aspects of your personal character. Achieving goals involves understanding your purpose, having strong determination, and implementing a reward system to keep you motivated on the path you've chosen. The most crucial element is to have a goal that consistently inspires you to strive forward.
Steps
Set Your Goals

Understand your life goals. You may want to obtain a higher academic degree, get married, succeed in business, or write a book. Start envisioning these goals and talk to successful people about how they achieved their dreams. Ask yourself what truly makes you happy and pursue that happiness.

Recognize Your Strengths. It’s a poor idea to follow a life path just because someone told you to. However, others may be able to identify your strengths in ways that you often cannot. Listen to what they say about your strengths and weaknesses. Try adjusting your goals to align with your strengths.
- For example, if you're good at drawing, consider a career in graphic design. If you excel at writing, think about how you can leverage that skill in your work. This doesn’t necessarily mean you should commit to becoming a novelist or an artist, which are challenging professions. Instead, look for other careers that utilize these skills, such as advertising, architecture, interior design, or law.

Identify Obstacles to Your Goals. For example, you may have a business idea but lack the capital to make it successful at the start. It’s unrealistic to pursue a sport or a specialized career beyond a certain age. Talk to people who have pursued the path you are interested in to decide if it’s a viable option for you.
Create a Plan

Talk to Successful People. To gain insight into what you need to do to achieve your goal, you should speak with someone who has already succeeded in that area. Ask them about the steps they took to become successful. Try to understand the “price” they had to pay, in terms of the hours they dedicated each day. Develop a plan to follow in their footsteps.
- Part of this involves creating a daily schedule. If they commit to working 3 hours a day, consider whether you can do the same. Will you need to cut back on TV time or strictly limit your daily TV hours? You’ll only know the result if you put the calculations into practice.

Create an Action Plan to Achieve Your Goals. Your goals will be more achievable if you create a plan to track them. Set a timeline for each goal and determine the necessary steps to accomplish each one. Write down the specific dates, the smaller steps, and the milestones that can be verified.
- Decide the steps needed to achieve each of your life goals. For example, to get into a prestigious law school in the U.S., you first need a bachelor’s degree with a high GPA. Then, you will need to score well on the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT). After that, you’ll apply to the selected list of top law schools.
- Break each large goal into smaller steps. For instance, applying to a top law school will require you to submit recommendation letters, write a personal essay, and list any legal office experience you have. Identifying these smaller steps early helps you proactively establish relationships with professors who can write recommendation letters before you graduate. Similarly, you can begin planning to find a part-time job at a law office during the summers while still in school.
- Create a plan to identify obstacles and personal challenges. For example, if your goal is to get married and start a family but you struggle with shyness, you might ask friends to introduce you to others, attend more social events, or seek advice from a relationship counselor.

Always Stay Motivated. Once you have an action plan, you should reward yourself each time you achieve a goal. If it’s a small goal, go out for dinner or grab a drink, maybe take a short break. For larger goals, consider taking an extended vacation. Rewarding yourself keeps you motivated, but ensure that you’ve set success milestones, like a specific percentage increase in sales or a score on the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT). Otherwise, you might not push yourself to meet high standards.
- Reflect on your personal needs. Along with physical needs such as being fed, sheltered, and healthy, consider your mental, emotional, and spiritual needs as you strive to achieve something in life. The need to feel respected, encouraged mentally, challenged, and loved are crucial factors to maintaining motivation. Always stay mindful of the results of your efforts.
- Confirm that your goals will nurture motivation. For example, the opportunity to build a loving family is more achievable if you choose a partner who helps you feel loved and respected, and motivates you to pursue your life goals.

Assess Your Progress. Continuously evaluate whether you are achieving your set goals. If not, decide if you are fully committed, and if not, allocate more time in your schedule to achieve what you expect. If you’re working hard but not getting results, consider a different strategy that might be more effective, or think about setting a new goal.
Change Your Perspective on Life

Learn to Delay Gratification. One of the most predictive traits of successful people is their ability to delay gratification for a greater reward in the future. Break a bad habit that wastes time or harms your health—like eating junk food or watching TV—and practice giving it up as long as you can bear it.
- This is demonstrated by the marshmallow test, where children were promised two marshmallows if they could resist eating one for 15 minutes. Those who delayed gratification for the second marshmallow had higher SAT scores (the Scholastic Aptitude Test, one of the standardized tests for university applications in the U.S.), better health, and a lower risk of drug abuse. Follow-up studies showed that children who knew they would get a reward for delaying gratification had a higher chance of success.

Cultivate Persistence and Endurance. Similarly, it’s important to practice patience. Stop thinking of life as a sprint, and start thinking of it as a marathon. Don’t expect to achieve your goal in a short burst of effort. Always stay positive and aim for your goal with as much persistence as possible.
- For example, Seinfeld argues that the key to success is to relax and write a few jokes every day. It’s not about a stressful or intensely stimulating phase, but about a consistent, committed habit.
- Some recommend tackling the most important or challenging task first thing in the morning. If you do, you’ll build momentum and those difficult tasks won’t scare you into procrastination.

Continuing to Develop Social Skills. Studies demonstrate that the most successful individuals today are those who blend their skills with proper social interactions in various situations. Social skills are becoming increasingly vital in the modern world. Consistent practice is the key to cultivating these abilities.
- Practice social integration, even if it's as simple as saying 'hello' or 'thank you' to someone you encounter in public. Observe how public figures behave to determine what attracts others. Similarly, pay attention to how people respond to you to recognize what works and what doesn't.

Confidence. Many studies indicate that the confidence you project is just as crucial as your actual level of expertise. Reflect on your past achievements. Train your body language to express confidence. Once you develop the confidence to act and succeed, it will go hand in hand with your accomplishments.
- To showcase confidence, stand tall with your shoulders back and chest out. Ensure your voice is clear and strong. Make eye contact when talking to someone. Exercise regularly to feel and appear healthy and strong.

Embrace Change. Many people feel that accepting change challenges their true nature. However, the most successful individuals are those who do not view themselves as finished products. Instead, they see themselves as continuously growing, evolving their skills, and applying them to the world around them. Set yourself as an example of success and follow in the footsteps of others.
- While authenticity is a valuable trait, you should not let the inability to change hold you back. Rather, embrace the concept of evolving authenticity: your true self is the person you are becoming, not who you once were.
