Straight, shiny hair is always in style, and fortunately for those with curly or wavy hair, there are many effective ways to switch up your look. While heat straightening is one method, frequent heat exposure can lead to damage. Try gentler techniques to transform curly hair into straight locks.
Steps
Use straightening shampoo and nourish dry hair

Purchase straightening products. Straightening shampoos and conditioners are specially formulated to reduce curls. Visit a beauty store or hair salon to find the best products or consult a professional hairstylist for recommendations.
- Check the ingredients on the shampoo and conditioner you buy. Ensure the main ingredient is not alcohol, as it can dry out your hair and make it harder to straighten.
- Buy a straightening serum or dry conditioner to help smooth hair follicles.

Wash and condition your hair with straightening products. Leave the conditioner on for 15 to 45 minutes, depending on your hair's moisture level. Rinse thoroughly and use a towel to absorb excess water, reducing dampness.
Apply a heat-protectant serum. This shields your hair follicles during blow-drying and enhances shine. Comb your hair after applying to ensure even distribution of the serum.
Use an ionic blow dryer. Section your hair into manageable parts, drying from the back to the front. Work on each section until smooth before moving to the next. Dry from roots to ends, using a round brush or a hard plastic comb while blow-drying.
Finish with a styling product. Once your hair is completely dry, comb it straight and apply a small amount of styling product or mousse to maintain the look.
Brush your hair while using a fan
Wash and deep condition your hair. After rinsing, gently towel-dry your hair, leaving it damp but not soaking wet. If you prefer to apply a straightening serum at this stage, use your hands to distribute it evenly.
Clip up most of your hair. Leave only a small section loose. This will be the first part you dry.
Sit in front of a fan. A table fan or box fan works well. Turn it on to blow directly onto your hair.
Use a paddle brush to comb your hair. Comb through your hair in front of the fan, following long, straight strokes. Start at the roots and brush to the ends, holding the hair straight briefly before releasing it from the brush.
Once the first section is dry, move on to the next. Repeat the process until your hair is completely dry. This may take around 15 minutes, depending on your hair's length and thickness.
- Continue drying until your hair is fully dry. Even a little moisture can cause curls to reappear.
- Pay extra attention to the roots, as they tend to curl unless completely dry.
Finish with a styling product. Once your hair is completely dry, comb it through and apply a small amount of styling product or mousse to maintain the straight look.
Use curling rollers
Wash and deep condition your hair. After rinsing, gently towel-dry your hair, leaving it damp but not soaking wet. If you wish to apply a straightening serum at this stage, use your hands to spread it evenly. Comb your hair thoroughly to ensure it’s straight before rolling.
Take a small section of hair. Comb through it. Place the curling roller at the ends and roll upward. Once the hair is rolled close to the scalp, secure the roller with a clip.
- Repeat the process until all sections are rolled.
- Follow the same rolling technique to ensure straight hair when the rollers are removed.
Dry your hair. As with other straightening methods, ensuring your hair is completely dry is crucial to achieving the desired result. You can air-dry your hair after rolling or use a blow dryer on a low heat setting.
Remove the rollers. Unclip and release your hair. It will appear smooth and straight.
Alternative Methods
Natural hair straightening treatment. Mix one egg with two cups of milk and soak your hair in the mixture. This will straighten the protein strands in your hair over an extended period.
- Leave your hair in the milk for 10 minutes, then cover with a shower cap and let it sit for 30 minutes.
- Next, wash your hair as usual and either blow-dry or air-dry it using a fan.
Wrap your hair. Divide freshly washed hair into two sections and comb it straight. Take the left section and cross it over the right. Wrap it tightly around your head and secure with a clip. Take the right section and wrap it around the other side, securing it with a clip. Once your hair is completely dry, remove the clips and comb it straight.
Tie your hair. Divide freshly washed hair into two or more even sections and comb it straight. Use soft hair ties to secure each section.
- Start with the first tie close to your scalp.
- Add a second tie just below the first. The ties should be close together.
- Continue adding ties until you reach the ends. Repeat for the remaining sections.
Tips
- Rinse your hair with cold water to add shine.
- Avoid tying your hair or braiding it after washing, as this can create waves or curls.
- Be gentle when combing wet hair, as it is more prone to stretching and breaking. Use a detangling product and a wide-tooth comb if necessary.
- Avoid heat styling tools, as they can dry out your hair and cause split ends.
- Air-dry your hair but comb it gently while drying.
- Let your hair dry completely before going to bed.
- Moisturize your hair. Tie it in a low ponytail just below the nape of your neck. Add hair ties every 5cm until you reach the ends. Leave it overnight. Remove the ties in the morning and comb your hair straight.
- Avoid paddle brushes, as they can damage your hair and cause split ends. Instead, use a wide-tooth comb and a detangling product (optional).
- Keep your hair away from humidity.
- Comb your hair while it’s still wet.
- Wash your hair in the afternoon instead of the evening to allow it to dry completely before bedtime.
Warnings
- Heatless straightening methods may not work well on extremely curly hair. You may end up with slightly wavy, shiny hair instead.
- Avoid blow-drying your hair upside down, as it can make your hair appear thicker.
