You can use a Visa gift card just like a credit or debit card for transactions. While some Visa gift cards are automatically activated upon purchase, others require additional steps to be activated. To activate, either call the number printed on the card or visit the website and enter the necessary information. After activation, you may register the card if you wish to use it for online payments.
Steps to Follow
Call the number on the card
Call the number listed on the sticker on the front of the card. Most credit and debit cards have a sticker on the front when you first receive them, which includes the phone number you need to call to activate the card. This also applies to Visa gift cards. If there’s a sticker on the front, call the number listed on it and follow the automated instructions to activate the card.
- To activate the card by phone, you’ll need to verify your account number and CVV (Card Verification Value) by entering the information on the keypad.
- The CVV code is 3 digits and is typically printed on the back of the card.
If there is no label on the front of the card, call the number printed on the back of the card. Visa gift cards have a customer service number printed on the back. You can call and follow the prompts to activate the card. Generally, you will need to verify your card over the phone by entering the account number and setting up a PIN before use.
- Some Visa gift cards come with a pre-set PIN. You will receive the PIN when activating the card.
- If you'd like to speak with a customer service representative instead of following the automated system, you can try pressing '0' repeatedly on your phone. This usually directs the call to a customer service agent.
Contact Visa directly if you're unsure about how to activate your card. If you have any questions during the activation process, the best option is to call the customer service hotline for the card.

Activate the card online
Visit the activation link provided on the label on the front of the card. If you'd rather not make a phone call, you can activate your Visa gift card online. Usually, the activation link will be on the back of the card or printed on the label on the front. Once you visit the link, you will be prompted to register your card online.
Visit the website listed on the back of the card if no activation label is provided. If there is no specific activation link on the label, you can flip the card over and look for the issuer's website. The issuer’s website will include a link to activate the gift card.
Enter your details to register the card. Although not required, it is recommended to register your card in case you encounter issues when using it in the future. You also need to register the card with the original issuer to make online transactions.
- Activating the card allows you to use it for in-person payments. After registration, you can also use the linked account to make online purchases, which is necessary for online shopping.
- You may be asked to provide full name, address, date of birth, or an ID number. This is a legal requirement in most cases.
- When making an online transaction with a registered card, the address and name you enter will be matched with the card's details. If they don't match, the payment won't be processed.
Be cautious of suspicious websites and scams when registering your card. There are many online scams asking for personal information related to your gift card, and if scammers gain access to that information, the balance on the card could be drained. Always register or activate the card only through Visa or the issuer listed on the card.
Use the card safely
Sign the back of the card to prevent unauthorized use. Flip the card over and sign the blank space on the back to protect against potential fraudulent use. When you swipe the card, the merchant can compare your signature with the one on the sales receipt to verify the cardholder.
Record your card information in case you lose it. Write down your account number and the registration details linked to the card in a secure place. If you lose the card, you won’t be able to request a replacement, but you can still make online payments if you have the account information.
Use the card before it expires. Visa gift cards typically have an expiration date. If you do not activate and use the card before this date, the balance will no longer be valid.
