If your Steam settings are unresponsive or your overlay isn't working, follow these steps to resolve the issue and regain control over your Steam preferences!
How to Fix "Steam Settings Unresponsive" Issue
- A common fix for greyed-out options in Steam's settings is to disable Family View or restart the Steam client.
- Entering and exiting Big Picture Mode can sometimes reactivate your Steam settings.
- If you're unable to access the in-game overlay, ensure the setting is enabled in your preferences.
Instructions
Turn off Family View.
Family View limits the actions available to the user, including making Settings inaccessible. To disable it, click on the Family View icon next to your profile name and image. The icon appears green when Family View is active.
- Enter your PIN when prompted. Only the account holder who set up Family View will know the PIN. If you're unsure, ask them for it.
- Click Ok after entering the PIN to turn off Family View.
- To re-enable Family View, simply click the icon again.
- Family View is designed to let parents manage how children use Steam, restricting access to settings and unapproved games.
Restart Steam.
A quick restart can often resolve issues. Temporary glitches may cause settings to be hidden, and closing and reopening Steam might resolve the greyed-out settings issue. To fully shut down Steam, go to Steam > Exit. Ensure Steam is not running in the background by checking Activity Monitor or Task Manager before restarting.
- If Steam launches automatically when you start your computer, disable this feature to manually open Steam.
Switch in and out of Big Picture Mode.
Forcing Steam to reload can make the Settings interactive again. This is particularly helpful when Steam opens but seems to have a pop-up effect that causes everything to become unresponsive. Exiting and re-entering Big Picture Mode can cancel the pop-up and restore normal functionality to Steam.
- To enter and exit Big Picture Mode, click the Display icon in the top-right corner that looks like a TV, then press Alt + Enter on your keyboard.
Enable Steam overlay options in Settings.
You need to enable the overlay in Steam settings to use it. To do this, navigate to Settings > In-Game, then toggle the setting next to "Enable the Steam overlay while in-game" to the on position (blue).
- The default keyboard shortcut for opening the Steam overlay in-game is Shift + Tab, but you can change this shortcut in the "In-game" settings.
Disable Beta features.
Participating in Beta features may introduce bugs into your Steam client. This could lead to issues like greyed-out Settings. To disable the Beta features, go to Settings > Interface and select "No beta chosen" from the drop-down next to "Client Beta Participation."
