This guide provides detailed instructions on how to increase or decrease the bass levels for your computer speakers. While some Windows computers feature built-in Sound settings that allow you to add and customize an audio equalizer, most Windows and Mac systems require third-party equalizer software to adjust the bass settings effectively.
Steps
Using Sound Settings on Windows

Open the Sound menu. Type sound into the Start menu, then click on Sound at the top of the window. The Sound window will appear immediately.

Double-click on Speakers. This option features a speaker icon with a green and white checkmark in the bottom-left corner.
- First, you must click on the Playback tab located at the top-left corner of the Sound window.

Click on the Enhancements tab. This tab is located at the top of the Speakers Properties window.
- If you don’t see this tab, you won’t be able to adjust the bass on your computer through the Sound settings. Instead, try using an audio equalizer.

Check the "Equalizer" box. This option appears in the middle of the Speakers Properties window, but you may need to scroll down to find it.
- The options in the window are arranged alphabetically.
- If you don’t see "Equalizer," your computer’s sound card doesn’t support bass adjustment. You’ll need to download and use another program to adjust your computer’s bass.
- If you don’t see "Equalizer," look for the "Bass Boost" option instead; check this box to increase the default bass output of your computer.

Click on ⋯. This option is located on the far right of the "Setting" heading near the bottom of the page.

Click on the "None" box. This option is located at the top of the EQ window. Another menu will appear here.

Click on Bass. This action automatically adjusts your computer's audio output to enhance bass effects.
- You can click and drag the sliders in the middle of the page toward the center of each bar to reduce the bass.

Click on Save. Your settings will be saved.

Click on OK at the bottom of the window. This will apply the customizations to your computer's current audio output.
Using Equalizer APO for Windows

Open the Equalizer APO download page. Visit https://sourceforge.net/projects/equalizerapo/ using your computer's browser.

Click on Download. This is the dark green button at the top-left corner of the page. Clicking it will download the Equalizer APO setup file to your computer.
- If your browser prompts you to choose a download location, select a folder or click Save.
- The Equalizer APO file downloaded from this page is not a virus or malicious file, but your browser may still ask for confirmation since it is an executable file.

Complete the initial Equalizer APO setup. Double-click the Equalizer APO setup file and follow these steps:
- Click Yes when prompted.
- Click Next.
- Click I Agree.
- Click Next.
- Click Install.

Check the box next to your speakers' name. In the Configurator window, you'll see a list of playback devices; checking the box next to your computer's speakers (e.g., "Speakers") will set them as the playback device for Equalizer APO.

Save the settings. Click OK at the bottom of the window, then click OK again when prompted.

Check the "Reboot now" box. This option is located in the middle of the window.

Click on Finish. This option is located at the bottom of the window. Clicking it will restart your computer and apply the Equalizer APO program to your computer's audio output.
Open the Configuration Editor.Start
configuration editorConfiguration Editor
Boost your computer's bass. You can adjust the bass in the Configuration Editor window, which features a grid: drag any slider from the "25" to "160" columns above the "0" line, and any slider to the right of "250" below the "0" line.
- Keep the "250" slider on the "0" line.
- If you want to reduce the bass, drag the sliders from "25" to "160" below the "0" line.
- It's best to test the audio while adjusting these settings to determine whether to increase or decrease the slider values.

Save your changes. Click File at the top of the window, then click Save in the dropdown menu. This will immediately apply the bass settings to your computer's speakers.
- You may need to revisit and tweak the speaker settings in the Configuration Editor when listening to different types of audio.
Using eqMac for Mac

Open the eqMac download page. Visit https://www.bitgapp.com/eqmac/ using your computer's browser.

Click on Download. This is the gray button on the far right side of the page.

Install eqMac. Once the eqMac program is downloaded, follow these steps to install it:
- Double-click the eqMac DMG file.
- Click and drag the eqMac icon into the "Applications" folder.
- Verify the installation when prompted.
- Follow any on-screen instructions.

Open Launchpad. This is the application with the rocket icon in your Mac's Dock.

Click on eqMac. This program features an icon with vertical sliders. You'll see eqMac open in your Mac's menu bar.
- You may need to scroll left or right to find the eqMac icon.
- You may also need to click Open after selecting the icon.

Click the eqMac icon in the menu bar. This is the vertical slider icon displayed in the top-right corner of the menu bar. A new window will appear immediately.

Identify which sliders control the bass. In the displayed list of options, you'll see a series of numbered sliders. These sliders control the following:
- Bass — The sliders labeled "32", "64", and "125" control your computer's bass.
- Treble — The sliders labeled "500", "1K", "2K", "4K", "8K", and "16K" control your computer's treble.
- Neutral — The "250" slider should remain on the horizontal line.

Adjust your computer's bass. Here are a few adjustments you can make:
- To increase bass, drag the bass sliders above the "0" line and ensure the treble sliders are pulled below that line.
- To reduce bass, drag the bass sliders to the "0" line (or below) and keep the treble sliders near that line (either above or below).
- Test your computer's audio after adjusting the sliders to fine-tune the bass.

Save your bass settings. Click the floppy disk icon in the top-right corner of the menu, enter a name for the preset, and click the floppy disk icon again. This allows you to select this preset even after switching back to your computer's default sound settings.
Tips
- Professional audio programs, though more expensive, offer superior sound customization options for your computer. Consider trying Graphic Equalizer Studio for Windows or Boom 2 for Mac.
Warnings
- Experiment multiple times when adjusting the bass. Don’t hesitate to try different settings.
