This Mytour page will guide you on how to adjust Alexa's volume using voice commands or manual controls on devices like the Amazon Echo and Echo Dot. These methods work even when Alexa is playing music, radio, or other high-volume audio sources. If Alexa's volume isn't loud enough, you may need to connect to an external speaker. You can adjust both the regular volume and the "Sound" volume for notifications and alarms.
Steps
Using Voice Commands
Say "Alexa". Use the wake command to activate Alexa, and she will start listening for your next instruction.
- The default wake command is "Alexa," but if you've changed it to "Echo," "Amazon," or another phrase, use the previously set wake command.
Ask Alexa to increase or decrease the volume. Request Alexa to adjust the volume up or down in your preferred way, and she will comply. For example, say "Alexa, increase the volume" or "Alexa, lower volume."
- You can phrase it more naturally, such as "Alexa, would you please lower the volume for me?" However, simply saying "Alexa, louder," or "Alexa, decrease," will also work.
Tip: Alexa understands words like raise/lower, increase/decrease, higher/lower, up/down, and louder/softer, so use them intuitively.
Adjust the volume to a specific level between 0 and 10. The lowest volume level is 0, which is mute, and the highest is 10. You can ask Alexa to set the volume to a specific level.
- For example, say "Alexa, set the volume to 6," or simply "Alexa, volume 6."
Ask Alexa to mute. Simply say "Alexa, mute" to silence the device and "Alexa, unmute" to restore the sound. When unmuted, the volume will return to the level you were previously listening to.
- You can also unmute by asking Alexa to set the volume to a desired level, such as "Alexa, volume 3."
Use hardware volume controls
For newer Echo devices, press ＋ or － to adjust the volume. Press the "+" or "-" buttons located on the top of the device.
Note: This applies to Echo and Echo Dot Gen 2 devices, as well as Echo Show and Echo Spot.
For devices with a volume ring, rotate the ring to adjust the volume. Turn the ring clockwise to increase the volume and counterclockwise to decrease it. The illuminated ring will display the current volume level in white.
Note: Devices with a volume ring include Echo and Echo Dot Gen 1 models, as well as newer Echo Plus devices.
Use the Alexa App
Open the Alexa app. This app features a blue icon with a white outlined circle.
Tap on the Devices tab. This icon is located at the bottom-right corner and has two sliders.
Select Echo & Alexa. This icon resembles an Alexa Echo speaker. A list of all Alexa devices will appear.
Tap on the device you want to adjust. This will open the device settings screen.
Drag the "Volume" slider to adjust the volume. The volume slider is located on the device settings screen. Slide it to the right to increase the volume or to the left to decrease it.
Adjust Alarm, Notification, and Timer Sounds
Open the Alexa app. This app features a blue icon with a white outlined circle.
Tap on the Devices tab. This icon is located at the bottom-right corner and has two sliders.
Select Echo & Alexa. This icon resembles an Alexa Echo speaker. A list of all Alexa devices will appear.
Tap on the device you want to adjust. This will open the device settings menu.
Scroll down and tap Sounds. This option is located under the "General" heading. It allows you to adjust the volume for alarms, notifications, and timers.
Drag the slider to adjust the volume. The slider is at the top of the screen. Slide it to the right to increase the volume for alarms, notifications, and sounds. Slide it to the left to decrease Alexa's speaker volume.
Tip: You can also tap the Alarm or Notification options to select custom sounds for your alarms and notifications.
Advice
- If you consistently experience sound issues, such as inconsistent audio, try unplugging the device for about 10 seconds and plugging it back in.
- If the Echo device is connected to external speakers playing music at high volume, Alexa may not recognize your voice or commands. Instead, you may need to use hardware buttons or the volume ring.
- Adjusting the volume will cause the Echo's light ring to display the current volume level in white before turning off.
- Shorter commands are still better. While you can say anything you want to Alexa to change the volume, remember that longer commands are more prone to errors.
- If you consistently have trouble adjusting the volume with voice commands, consider relocating your device. Place it closer to where you issue commands and remove any obstacles—especially those nearby or blocking the device.
