If you've tried everything to care for your acne-prone or oily skin, give a charcoal face mask a try! While more research is needed to prove how charcoal improves skin, masks made from this ingredient can effectively remove blackheads and fine facial hair. After testing for skin sensitivity, apply the mask to the affected areas and let it dry. Gently peel off the mask before rinsing your face and applying moisturizer.
Steps
Wash your face before applying a charcoal face mask

Choose a high-quality charcoal face mask. Purchase masks from reputable skincare or makeup brands. Look for masks containing activated charcoal, soothing ingredients (like aloe vera), and essential oils to comfort the skin.
- If you're making your own charcoal face mask, avoid using super glue as it contains ingredients that can harden the mask and potentially damage your skin when removed.

Test for skin sensitivity. Whether you mix your own mask or buy a pre-made one, check for allergic reactions or itching before applying it to your face. Apply a small amount of the mask mixture to your cheek or the inside of your wrist. Wait 10 minutes to check for signs of irritation.
- Signs of itching or allergies include redness, swelling, hives, or itching.

Tie your hair back if necessary. If you're concerned about your hair falling onto your face while applying the mask, tie it back. This will prevent your hair from sticking to the charcoal face mask.

Cleanse and exfoliate before applying the mask. Use your favorite gentle cleanser to wash your face. Rinse to remove dirt and oil, preparing your skin for the mask. To open your pores, use a mild exfoliating scrub and rinse thoroughly before applying the mask.
Apply the Charcoal Face Mask
Apply the charcoal face mask mixture to your face. Squeeze a coin-sized amount of the mask mixture into a small bowl. Dip a clean brush into the mixture and spread it evenly over your skin. You can apply it to your entire face or just the affected areas. Consider covering the T-zone (between your nose and forehead) if you have acne or blackheads.
- You can use a flat, wide makeup brush or a brush specifically designed for face masks. If you don't have a brush, you can use clean fingers to apply the mask.
- Be as gentle as possible when applying the mask to irritated areas to avoid further irritation.

Avoid applying the mask near the eyes and lips. The skin around the eyes and lips is highly sensitive, so it's best to avoid applying the mask there. Stand in front of a mirror while applying the mask to ensure precise placement.

Wait for about 7 to 10 minutes. The face mask will dry completely, and your skin may feel tight or itchy. If it causes discomfort or pain, rinse it off before the 10-minute mark.

Peel off the charcoal face mask. Start peeling from the bottom of the mask and slowly work your way upward. If applied to the T-zone, peel from near the nose upward toward the forehead.

Wash your face and moisturize after removing the mask. You may notice small black residue from the mask on your skin. Use a gentle cleanser to wash your face and rinse with cool water. Apply a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizer and let your skin air dry.

Use the charcoal face mask once every two weeks or less. To minimize skin irritation, consider using this mask only when dealing with acne. Since the charcoal mask removes the top layer of skin and fine facial hair, wait at least two weeks before reapplying.
- If you have eczema or sensitive skin, avoid using charcoal masks as they may cause further damage.
